WHAT IS
CREATIVITY?
Bernadette Duffy 2006 defines creativity as:
Ability to see things in fresh way

Learning from past experiences and relating this learning

to new situations
Thinking along unorthodox lines and breaking barriers

Using non traditional approaches to solving problems

Going further than information given

Creating something unique

FOUR KEY CONCEPTS (National Advisory
Committee on Creative and Cultural Education)
Using Imagination- to imagine is to create a
1 mental image, picture, sound or even a feeling
in the mind.
A fashioning process- problems, solutions or
2 novel ideas may come unexpectedly but work
must be made of them to turn thoughts and
ideas into creative action.
FOUR KEY CONCEPTS (National Advisory
Committee on Creative and Cultural Education)
Pursuing purposes- creative activity aims to
3 produce tangible outcomes in relation to the
purpose.

4 Being Original- uniqueness

CATEGORIES OF ORIGINALITY

HISTORIC- The Beethovens and Einsteins

were uniquely creative in relation to the other
people in their field. Einstein develop his
relativity theory and Beethoven introduced a
choir into symphonic work. Their ideas are
completely new and original to mankind.
CATEGORIES OF ORIGINALITY

RELATIVE- displayed when one’s work is

original in relation to that of a particular group
or peer.
CATEGORIES OF ORIGINALITY

JUDGING VALUE- it is important to evaluate

creative ideas or outcomes against the
intended purposes since some outcomes may
be highly original but inappropriate for the
situation at hand.
Creativity and imagination may be hard to
define but they are part of what makes
teachers and students human beings.
Creativity- about connecting the previously
unconnected in ways that are meaning to the
individual.

Imagination- about internalizing perceptions and

ascribing objects and events with new meanings.
Through creative and imaginative endeavours,
the learners can:
>communicate their feelings in non-verbal and pre-verbal ways.
>express their thoughts
>comprehend, respond, and represent their perceptions and
understanding of the world
>experience beauty and lasting value
Through creative and imaginative endeavours,
the learners can:
>express their cultural heritage and increase their
understanding of the other cultures
>solve problems and give mastery
>gain self-esteem
>>Teachers can not develop the creative abilities of
their students if they themselves are not creative.
>>Teaching for creativity can not be achieved without
creative teaching.
>>Teaching creativity is inevitable in the 21 st century.
Teaching creatively- is defined as teacher
imaginative approaches to make learning more
interesting and effective.

Teaching for creativity- are forms of teaching that

are intended to develop people’s own creative
thinking or behaviour.
