Objectives
● The learners should be able to explain the meaning of mitosis.
● The learners should be able to identify and explain the different
phases of mitosis as well as their processes.
● The learners should be able to elaborate the importance of mitosis to
all living organisms.
It is considered as
the basic unit of
life?

GENES
Question Time!
Do you still remember your appearance as a child, say,
when you were four or five years old? How would you
compare your appearance then vs. now?

In what aspect did your body change?

How do you think did this happen?

EXPLORE!

ONION ROOT TIP
What is
Mitosis?
• A type of cell division

• It forms two identical daughter

cells each with the same number
and kind of chromosomes as the
parent cell.

• Its major purpose is for growth

and to replace worn out cells.
What is Meosis?
• A type of cell division

• It forms four daughter cells each

with half the number of
chromosomes as the parent cell.

• This process is required to

produce egg and sperm cells for
sexual reproduction.

SIMILARITIES

• Both are involved in cell division

• Starts with a diploid parent cell
• Has common phases
• Occurs in plants and animals
INTERPHASE
• the cell grows and copies
its DNA before moving
into mitosis
• chromosomes will align,
separate, and move into
new daughter cells
PROPHASE
• the first phase of mitosis
• the process that separates the
duplicated genetic material carried
in the nucleus of a parent cell into
two identical daughter cells
• the complex of DNA and proteins
contained in the nucleus, known as
chromatin, condenses
METAPHASE
• the nucleus dissolves and
the cell's chromosomes
condense and move
together, aligning in the
center of the dividing
cell.
ANAPHASE
• process that separates the
duplicated genetic material carried
in the nucleus of a parent cell into
two identical daughter cells.
TELOPHASE
• the fifth and final phase
of mitosis
• the process that separates
the duplicated genetic
material carried in the
nucleus of a parent cell
into two identical
daughter cells
CYTOKINESIS
• the physical process of cell
division, which divides the
cytoplasm of a parental cell into
two daughter cells.
IMPORTANCE
OF MITOSIS
GENETIC STABILITY
● Mitosis helps splits the chromosomes and divide into two
new daughter cells, it copies the DNA form of the parent
cell hence the two new daughter cells are identical, thus
mitosis helps in preserving and maintaining the genetic
stability of a particular population.
GROWTH
● Mitosis help in increasing the number of cells in a living
organism thereby playing a significant role in the growth
of a living organism.
REPLACEMENT AND
REGENERATION OF NEW CELLS
● Mitosis helps in the production of identical copies of
cells and thus helps in repairing the damaged tissue or
replacing the worn-out cells.
ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION
● Mitosis is used in the production of genetically similar
offspring. For example, budding of hydra and yeast,
binary fission in amoeba, etc.
