Joint Variation Day 3 1
Joint Variation Day 3 1

Prayer
Dear Lord and Father of all, Thank you for today.
Thank you for ways in which you provide for u all.
For Your protection and love we thank you. Help us
to focus our hearts and minds now on what we are
about to learn. Inspire us by Your Holy Spirit as we
listen and write. Guide us by your eternal light as
we discover more about the world around us. We
ask all this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

INTRODUCTION TO
JOINT VARIATION

“Joint Variation”
a type of variation that involves
direct relationship of more than two
quantities; almost like direct
variation but differ on the number
of quantities involved; that is, if any
of the independent variables
increase or decrease, the dependent
variable also increases or decreases
respectively.
Example:
The area of a triangle varies jointly
as the base and height since the
area will increase or decrease if the
any of the base or height increase
or decrease respectively.

Equation of joint variation
> a mathematical sentence that describes the relationship
between two quantities that are jointly proportional; “
varies jointly as and ” is written as where is the
constant of variation
Example:
If varies jointly as and and when and , what is the
equation of variation?
13
Example 1:
If varies jointly as and and when and , what
is the equation of variation?
Solution:
1. Translate the variation statement into an equation
𝑦 =𝑘𝑥𝑧
2. Use to solve for
𝑦 =𝑘𝑥𝑧 2=𝑘
28=𝑘 ( 2 ) (7 )
Thus, the equation of
28=𝑘 ( 14 ) variation 𝑦 =2 𝑥𝑧
1 4= (14 )
14
Example 2:
If varies jointly as and and when and , what is the equation
of variation?
Solution:
1. Translate the variation statement into an equation
𝑧 =𝑘𝑥 𝑦
2. Use to solve for
𝑧 =𝑘𝑥 𝑦 48
48= 𝑘 ( 4 ) ( 15 )60 =𝑘 𝑧 =𝑘𝑥 𝑦
48=60 𝑘 4 4
60=60 =𝑘 𝑧= 𝑥𝑦

Example 3:
If varies jointly as and the square of and when and ,
find when and .
Solution:
1. Translate the variation statement into an equation
2
𝑟 =𝑘𝑢 𝑣
2. Solve for using the values of , and .
2
𝑟 =𝑘𝑢 𝑣 −56=𝑘(−448) 2
2
−56= 𝑘 ( −7 ) ( 8 ) − 448=( −448) 𝑟 =𝑘𝑢 𝑣
−56=𝑘(−7)(64 ) 1 2
1 𝑟 = 𝑢𝑣
−56=𝑘(−7)(64 ) or =𝑘 8
−56=𝑘( −448) 8
