Various ways of asking

questions in French
● Raise the tone of your voice at
the end of a sentence.

Tu es Américain ? (Are you

American?)
● Changing the order of the words in a
sentence to form a question (inversion)
Using inversion to ask a question which means the verb
comes first and then the subject pronoun separated by a
hyphen

For eg:es-tu Américain ? (Are you American?)

● Add est-ce que before the sentence to
turn a statement into a question.
When you use est-ce que there is no need of any inversion.
The subject pronoun comes first and then the verb.

For eg:Est-ce que vous aimez chanter ? (Do you like to

sing? ).
By putting Est-ce que, you confirm that it is a question and not
just a statement.
● Qu’est-ce que means what

There is no need of any inversion if you are using Qu’est-

ce que

For eg:Qu’est-ce que vous faites dans la vie ? (What are

you doing in life?)
● Other interrogative words in French

2) Quand (When)
3) Combien (How much/how many)
4) Où (where)
5) Comment (How)
6) Qui? (Who?)
7) Quel/Quelle/Quelles/Quels ? (What? )
● Pourquoi (Why)

Pourquoi êtes-vous si tard ?

(Why are you so late?)
● Quand (When)

Quand partez-vous ?
(When are you leaving?)
● Combien

Combien d’enfants avez-vous ?

(How many children do you have?)

(Where do you live?)

Comment vas-tu ?
(How are you?)
● Qui ? (Who ? )

(Who are you?)
