Chapter 4

ENERGY ANALYSIS OF CLOSED

SYSTEMS
Objectives
• Examine the moving boundary work or P dV work commonly
encountered in reciprocating devices such as automotive engines and
compressors.
• Identify the first law of thermodynamics as simply a statement of the
conservation of energy principle for closed (fixed mass) systems.
• Develop the general energy balance applied to closed systems.
• Define the specific heat at constant volume and the specific heat at
constant pressure.
• Relate the specific heats to the calculation of the changes in internal
energy and enthalpy of ideal gases.
• Describe incompressible substances and determine the changes in their
internal energy and enthalpy.
• Solve energy balance problems for closed (fixed mass) systems that
involve heat and work interactions for general pure substances, ideal
gases, and incompressible substances.

4.1 MOVING BOUNDARY WORK
MOVING BOUNDARY WORK
Moving boundary work (P dV work): The Quasi-equilibrium process: A
expansion and compression work in a process during which the system
piston-cylinder device. remains nearly in equilibrium at all
times.

• A quasi-equilibrium process is a
thermodynamic process in which a system
undergoes a series of changes while remaining
almost in equilibrium at each stage. In
thermodynamics, equilibrium refers to a state
in which the system's properties, such as
temperature, pressure, and concentration, do
not change with time.
The boundary
work done during
a process depends
on the path
followed as well
as the end states.

represents the boundary work. The net work done
during a cycle is the
difference between
the work done by the
system and the work
done on the system.

6
• In thermodynamics, boundary work refers to the work done by or on a
system as a result of a change in volume at the system's boundary,
typically against an external pressure. The work done during a process
depends not only on the initial and final states of the system but also on
the path taken to go from the initial state to the final state. This is because
work is a path-dependent function.

• The reason for this path dependence lies in the fact that work is an integral
of pressure with respect to volume, and the pressure can vary at different
points along the path.

• This is in contrast to state functions, such as internal energy or enthalpy,

which depend only on the initial and final states and are independent of
the path taken.
