COMPARING AND

CONTRASTING
INFORMATION PRESENTED
IN DIFFERENT TEXTS
When conducting research on a particular
topic, we may come across different
materials discussing the same topic.
Some may offer similar information
compared to other texts, while others may
differ and the nature or depth. Some texts
may approach the same topic from
different stances. These similarities and
differences do not make one text or
another less worth reading-indeed, the
opposite is usually the case.
When comparing and contrasting
texts, we can follow these basic
guidelines.

1.Identify the main idea of each

text. Are they similar at this
central level? Do they have
contradictory main ideas?
