WHAT IS MENTAL HEALTH?
It includes our emotional, psychological, and
social well-being. It affects how we think, feel
and act. It also helps determine how we handle
stress, relate to others and make choices.
FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTES
TO MENTAL HEALTH
PROBLEMS:
• Biological factor, such as genes
• Life experiences, such as trauma or abuse
• Family history of mental health problems.

Take note that: Mental health problems are


common but help is available.

STRESS
WHAT IS STRESS?
• It is simply a reaction to stimulus that disturbs
our physical or mental equilibrium. In other
words, it is an omnipresent part of life.
• A stressful event can trigger the “fight-or-flight”
response, causing hormones such as adrenaline
and cortisol to surge through the body.
TYPES OF STRESS

EUSTRESS (POSITIVE) DISTRESS (NEGATIVE)


• The human body is designed to experience
stress and react to it. Stress can be positive
("eustress") keeping us alert and ready to avoid
danger.
• Stress becomes negative ("distress") when a
person faces continuous challenges without
relief or relaxation between challenges.

• A certain amount of stress is a normal part of
life. You can use some simple techniques and
strategies to help you cope.
• There are diagnosable medical conditions that
describe stress and anxiety that affect people
beyond the normal and manageable amount.
• Unmanageable stress and anxiety can be
unhealthy both physically and psychologically.
Situations that can cause feelings
of anxiety or stress:
• Moving
• Starting a new school or job
• Having an illness or injury
• Having a friend or family member who is
ill/injured
• Death of a family member or friend
• Getting married
• Having a baby
Common stressors that affects
adolescents:
• Schools
• Parents
• Peer Groups
• Lack of Life Skills
• Personal thoughts
The effects of stress in your body:

Stress is any change in the environment that requires


your body to react and adjust in response. The body
reacts to these changes with physical, mental and
emotional responses.
HOW DOES STRESS AFFECT
HEALTH?
• Distress can lead to physical symptoms
including headaches, upset stomach, elevated
blood pressure, chest pain, and problems
sleeping. Research suggests that stress also can
bring on or worsen certain symptoms or
diseases
