CHAPTER 1: FUNDAMENTALS OF
ARCHITECTURALS ACOUSTICS
WHAT IS ACHITECTURAL
ACOUSTICS?
Architectural acoustics is the study of sound in
homes and other buildings and the design of those
structures for optimal acoustic performance, including
control of sound transmission throughout the building,
maintaining conditions for good speech intelligibility, and
maintaining sound isolation for speech privacy.
THREE COMMON ELEMENTS OF ACOUSTICS SITUATION:

1.Source - Sound source means the place from which amplified

sound emanates, including, without limitation, a speaker,
loudspeaker, or other sound-producing instrument or person.
2.Transmission path - The passage of sound from one point to
another, e.g., from one room in a building to another, or from
the street into a room in the building.
3.Receiver - A device that accepts audio signals. An audio
receiver may refer to a stereo or A/V receiver, which are
control centers for audio and video sources, or it may be a
small, stand-alone Bluetooth receiver that functions as a
connector between a mobile device and the sound system.
WHAT IS SOUND?
Sound is a type of energy made by vibrations. When an
object vibrates, it causes movement in surrounding air
molecules. These molecules bump into the molecules close to
them, causing them to vibrate as well.

For airborne sound, the medium is air. For structure-

borne sound the medium is concrete, steel, wood, glass and
combinations of all of these.
Propagation of sound
Sound is a sequence of waves of pressure which
propagates through compressible media such
as:
GAS
LIQUID
SOLID
VELOCITY OF PROPAGATION
- is a measure of how fast a signal travels over time, or the
speed of the transmitted signal as compared to the speed of light.
SPEED OF SOUND
As sound travels much slower than speed of light.
Experimental data show that when the reflected sounds which
reach an observer are delayed more than about 0.058 second,
relative to direct sounds, they are distinguished as echoes.
(sound travels approximately 65 feet in this time interval)
WHAT IS FREQUENCY?
frequency, in physics, the number of waves that pass a fixed
point in unit time; also, the number of cycles or vibrations
undergone during one unit of time by a body in periodic motion.
WHAT IS WAVE FORM?
is a usually graphic representation of the shape of a wave that
indicates its characteristics.

TYPES OF WAVE FORM:

The most common periodic waveforms are the sine, triangle,
square, and sawtooth. These waveforms are said to be periodic
because the wave they represent can be repeated to produce a
constant tone. The faster the wave repeats, the higher the pitch of
the sound. Different waveforms have different harmonics.
