Introduction

The carpal bones are arranged in two rows at the base

of the hand.
The word "scaphoid" comes from the Greek term for
"boat." The scaphoid bone resembles a boat with its
relatively long, curved shape.
The scaphoid bone is one of the carpal bones on the
thumb side of the wrist
Def
Any break or anatomical discontinuity in the scaphoid
bone
 Scaphoid fractures are the most common fractures of
the carpal bones.
Causes
a fall onto an outstretched hand.
Skiing and scatting injury
MVA or RTA
Types
A nondisplaced scaphoid fracture means
that the bone has not shifted at all out of
position
A displaced fracture of the scaphoid occurs
when the bones had shifted out of position.
C/F
The signs of a scaphoid fracture include:
pain on the thumb side of the wrist
Swelling present at the anatomical snuff box
swelling and bruising at the base of the thumb
difficulty gripping objects
Diagnosis
X ray
CT scan
MRI scan
Rule of 70’ s for scaphoid

70% common carpal bone #

70% blood supply by dorsal branch of
radial artery
70% waist bone # area
70% # unite conservatively
Treatment
Conservative
# at waist and distal pole and undisplaced # treat with
conservative scaphoid cast
Displaced #
Percutaneous Screw Fixation
Clinical significiance
 Most commonly, the scaphoid breaks in its mid-
portion, called the "waist."
Fractures can also occur at both the proximal and
distal ends of the bone.
AVN COMMON COMLICATION
Take away to the home
Common Fracture bone
Common for 20 to 70 yrs
More than 55 yrs common complication AVN because
of Blood Supply
