CHAPTER 1

1.0 INTRODUCTION
Trolley is a mechanical device used to move heavy loads from one place to another.
Trolley can reduce the human burden in their daily lives. Trolley commonly used by a large
number of industries to transport physical products. When used properly, trolley can protect
people from having back injuries and other health problems that can result in lifting and carrying
heavy loads.
There are different kinds of trolleys in the system however, for different kind of application, we
have to select a specific type of trolley. This project aims to design and fabricate a multi-purpose
trolley with a fork which can be used for more than one field application.
1.1. BACKGROUND OF STUDY.
The trolley concept was first developed by Charles J Van who immigrated to the USA from
Belgium in 1869. He developed a trolley car power system that operated a short rail line at
Chicago industrial exposition in the years 1882 to 1883. A study was carried out which indicated
that Trolley Assist System, would be feasible for load transport operations. The experiment had
established the technical feasibility of a Trolley Assist System. Therefore, we agreed to design
and fabricate a multi-purpose trolley with a fork for Takoradi Technical University Mechanical
Department to minimize the difficulties in transporting of loads.
1.1. PROBLEM STATEMENT.
Trolley is a mechanical device used to move heavy loads from one place to another
Most trolleys used in the Mechanical shops requires man power to lift cylinders or loads unto it
whenever there is a need to transport from one place to another. This is because the part of the
trolley that carries the loads are made above ground level, therefore, lot effort are required in
lifting loads unto the trolley. We have discovered that manual lifting of heavy loads results in
waist pain, back strain, severe stress and time wasting.

1.4. AIM
To design and fabricate a multi-purpose trolley with a fork to perform a multi task.
1.5 OBJECTIVES
1. Lifting heavy objects especially where there are no lifting facilities.
2. Easy to lift loads over suitable height.
3. New option for transportation of loads which reduces man power.
1.6. SIGNIFICANT OF STUDY.
Designing and fabricating of this multi-purpose trolley with a fork will help to achieve the
following results;
i. Easy movement (using this trolley will lessen the use of muscle work and preserve
energy for more work).
ii. Using this type trolley will eliminate time wasted in raising heavy loads.

1.7. SCOPE/DELIMITATION OF THE PROJECT.

1. Reduces risk of accident and injury when using this type of trolley to carry load.
2. Increase productivity.
3. Its use is not limited to one field application.
4. Helps in easy lifting of loads.
Protection of transported goods.
1.8. LIMITATIONS
i. It cannot be use to carry cylindrical object above 1500mm height.
ii. it cannot use to carry liquid loads above 200 liters.
iii. It can’t be use to carry two cylindrical objects at a time.
1.9. DEFINITIONS OF TERMS
1.Trolley - a large metal frame on wheels used for transporting heavy or large items, such as gas
cylinders, welding machines and other objects.
2. Design - is a plan or specification for construction of an object.
3. Fabrication - is the construction of items from different parts using as least one of a range of
processes and materials such as metal, laminates etc.
4. wheel - is a circular object that revolves on an axle and is fixed below a trolley.
PROJECT LAYOUT
Multi-purpose trolley with a fork is a type of trolley fitted with rotating wheel so that it can be
push or pulled up or down. It can be operated manually to move heavy loads up and down easily.
Using this type of trolley will help minimize waste of time in manual lifting of heavy loads. It
increases productivity and protection of transported loads. This trolley can be only used to carry
cylindrical objects below 900mm height.

2.1 MAIN BODY
ADVANCE MATERIAL HANDLING TROLLEY USING TRI-WHEEL MECHANISM:
They introduced about a mechanism for easy transportation of heavy loads over uneven terrain.
The need for such a system arises from day-to-day requirements in our society. Devices such as
hand trolleys are used to relieve the stress of lifting while on flat ground. However, these devices
usually fails when it comes to carrying the loads over short height. Several designs were
conceived that would allow a non-industrial hand trolley to travel over stairs, curbs, or uneven
terrain while reducing the strain on the user.
In this, they conclude some limitations regarding the strength and built if the structure, it can
consider to be a small step forward, as far as stair climbing vehicles are concerned. During the
test run of this project, it was realized that it would not be a bad idea to consider this design for
carrying heavy loads up the stairs.
DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF A STAIR CLIMBING HAND TROLLEY: In this
article the design and manufacturing climbing hand trolley has been presented. The vehicle is
designed in such a way that it can climb a stepped path (like stairs) with its modified wheel
structure. But off the road, their efficiency is very dependent on the typical size of encountered
obstacles that have to be overcome in a standard motion mode. From the test run of the vehicle it
was seen that the maximum height the vehicle could climb the stair whose inclined angle was 44
degrees maximum. If the inclination is more than 44 degrees it would fail to climb the stair.
In this they concluded that during the test run of this project, it was realized that it would capable
of carrying heavy load without suffering and deformation or local fractures if it would go into
real world production at an ideal scale.
I. OBJECTIVES
1. Lifting heavy objects especially where there are no lifting facilities.
2. Easy to lift loads over suitable height.
3. New option for transportation of loads which reduces man power.
ii. CONCEPT AND PRINCIPLE
CONCEPT
A multi-purpose trolley with fork helps workers lift heavy loads to convenient working place,
helping reduce the risk of strained backs, injured shoulders and pulled back muscles. This trolley
use fork to lift objects. This trolley is the most environmentally friendly in comparison to other
trolleys. This works manually. This requires little maintenance because of fewer moving parts
and no engine. This trolley works anywhere since it is operated manually and does not require a
skilled operator.
PRINCIPLE
A multi-purpose trolley with a fork is a mechanical device that employs a manual operation to
lift loads. Typically, trolleys are used to lift large, heavy loads from one point to another.
Common application includes lifting and transporting of objects. A multi-purpose trolley with a
fork is a recommended way to help reduce incidence of musculoskeletal disorders by safely
lifting and transporting heavy loads. Once the scope of our project is determined, we began to
analyze the various components of the trolley which needed to be improved. Combining this
analysis with requirements, we determined that we needed to redesign the following features as
fork, supporting leg, hooker, trolley bed.
I. MATHEMATICAL REPRESENTATION
80mm = 8cm
A pipe of 80mm diameter and 1.5mm thickness is used for the frame section in manufacturing of
this multi-purpose trolley.
A plate of 10mm thickness is used as fork for the trolley. The width of the trolley = 400mm
Height of trolley = 1000mm Length of trolley = 500mm Length of fork = 250mm
To prevent pressure on the operator when moving objects, a supporting leg with wheel was
attached to the fame at the back.
Height of supporting leg = 350mm Length of handle = 200mm
