OF INSTRUCTION

PRESENTED BY:
ANGELIN REENA.R.A
I B.ED.ENGLISH
VIEWS OF GANDHI :

Gandhi was against the inclusion of English in the

school curriculum.
He emphasized the learning of Indian languages and
providing education through mother tongue.
He notes that’s ‘English is today admittedly the world
language, I would therefore accord it a place as a
second, optional language, not in school, but in the
university course. We and our children must build on
our own heritage.
In Gandhi’s basic education , craft was included as an
important component.
He suggested that craft should not be provided just like
any other subject of study, but it should be the medium to
correlate all subjects of study.
Thus correlating craft with all subjects , will pave way for
“LEARNING BY DOING”.
Curriculum should includes,
* Handicrafts.
* Embroidery.
* Pottery.
* Book binding.
* Leather & Metal work.
SALIENT FEATURES OF GANDHI’S
BASIC EDUCATION :
Free and compulsory education for all boys and girls
between the age 7 to 14.
Education through the chosen craft.
All subjects are to be taught through the chosen
craft,using the correlational approach.
Self supporting aspects of education .
Teachers & students stay together and lead a simple
co-operative community life.
Mother tongue is the medium of instruction.
Emphasis on religious and moral training.
CONCLUSION:

Gandhi ,believed that the medium of basic education

should be the mother tongue . Strong mother tongue
foundation leads to a much better understanding of
the curriculum as well as a more positive attitude
towards school.
