AT SMK PELAYARAN
BACKGROUND
The Merchant Ship Nautical Department prepares
students to become crew members on trading ships (not
fishing ships). The material and skills learned in class
include navigation, emergency procedures, shipping safety
procedures, ship loading and unloading arrangements,
and so on.
Apart from technical and operational matters, students in
this department are provided with knowledge about
institutions related to ships and port administration.

FINDINGS
Some interesting facts about English Maritime
• Smart is generally used as a personal compliment only. However, in
English teaching smart maritime is aimed at efficient ships
• Take in, which we usually use to direct someone to lift something, but in
maritime English it means lowering the sails of a ship.
• Heave, which in maritime English means the vertical movement of a ship
at sea. Meanwhile, in general it means yes to lift something we want.
 Conclusion
General English only teaches general English material. For
example, four skills in English (speaking, listening, reading, and
writing), grammar and others. Meanwhile, in maritime English
lessons there are several terms used in English for the shipping
department, especially merchant marine nautics. .
