LOVE FOR LEARNING ITALIAN LANGUAGE BY JHAMPA LAHIRI IN
ACCORDANCE TO HIS 6 TO 9 ESSAYS..
 Reading with a dictionary
 Her mother tongue was Bengali
 She did PhD in English language
 She had a quest for learning Latin language
 It was her personal desire to learn Latin language
 She wished ‘Should I dream of a day in the future where I‘ll no longer need the
dictionary, the notebook, the pen
 She added’When I read in Italian I’m a more active reader, more involved even if less
skilled.
 Her extreme love for Italian language can be estimated by her these words “ When you’re
in love. You want to live forever. You want the emotion, the excitement you feel to last.
Reading in Italian arouse a similar longing in me. I don’t want to die because my death
would mean the end of my discovery of the language.
 In her essay ‘Gathering words “She begins with “ I’m in constantly hunting for words. I
would describe the process like this: everyday. I go into the words carrying the basket. I
find words all around: on the trees, in the bushes, on the ground. I gathered as many as
possible. I have insatiable appetite.
 In this essay her words clearly shows that how much she was eager to learn Latin
languages. She felt affection with language.
 She wished she could have so sharp memory that every Italian word could be infused in
her mind and couldn’t be forgotten. She became distressed when she found herself empty
with Italian words.
 In her essay the diary she talks about her shifting to Paris. She talks about her sufferings,
her misfortune in early days.then she talks about her habit of writing diary. She shares her
experience of writing dairy I Italian language. Although it was full of mistakes. She here
compares herself to an unequipped rider trying to climb a mountain. She says” it’s as if I
were writing with my left hand.
