What is cloud storage?

Cloud storage is when we store data at a remote

location online. Files and data are actually being
sent to a server that is connected to the internet
when they are sent to the cloud. This gives you
agility, global scale and durability, with
“anytime, anywhere” data access.
The 3 common systems
 1. Public cloud:

A public cloud is a type of computing in which a service

provider makes resources available to the public via the
internet. Resources vary by provider but may include
storage capabilities, applications, or virtual machines.
Some public cloud providers offer resources for free, while
clients pay for other resources by subscription or a pay-
per-usage model.

Some examples of public cloud are: Amazon Elastic

Compute Cloud (EC2), Microsoft Azure, IBM's Blue Cloud,
Sun Cloud and Google Cloud.
2. Private cloud:

Private cloud is a cloud computing environment that is

exclusively dedicated to a single entity or a service. It
provides a high level of security and privacy to data through
firewalls and internal hosting ensuring that operational and
sensitive data are not accessible to third-party providers. It
runs on the organisation’s premises or in an external data
centre and is managed by the organisation’s operations team
or a managed service provider.

Some examples of private cloud are: HP Data Centers,

Microsoft, Elastra-private cloud, and Ubuntu.
3. Hybrid cloud:

Hybrid cloud is the combination of both private cloud and

public cloud service provider enabling communication
between each distinct service.

Some examples of hybrid cloud are: AWS Outposts, Azure

Stack, Azure Arc, Google Anthos and VMware Cloud on
AWS.

Usability and accessibility
Most all of the cloud services come with an easy
to-use user interface and provide a feature of
drag and drop. For instance, you can think of
Google drive from Google or iDrive from Apple.
They both have a simple interface, and you can
easily upload your file on your online drive
without any expert knowledge. For example, if
you have saved a file in drive using a mobile
device, you can retrieve that file using a computer
or any other device with internet connectivity. It
doesn't matter where you are right now. If you
have a good internet connection, you can access
your files, which is saved online somewhere on
the data centers.
Cost-efficient
By only using the cloud storage service, the
business outsources the storage problem.
By using online data storage, the enterprise
reduces the expenses of internal resources.
With this technology, the company itself
does not need any inner power and
support to manage and store their data;
the cloud storage vendor handles all. There
are some cloud storage services provided
which give cloud storage for a lifetime at
an affordable price, which is a win-win offer
for small business and individual users.
Multiple users
The same cloud environment can
have more than one use associated
with it. With cloud storage, multiple
users can collaborate with the
common file. For instance, you can
give access to your files to multiple
users so they can access and edit
your file. The authorized person can
access your file from any part of the
world in real-time.
Scalability
With the cloud, it is easy to scale your
storage based on your data needs. If
you add another user and need more
storage, that's no problem. If you lose
a few users and suddenly have way too
much storage, it is easy to scale down
and save some money. This is an
advantage over external storage
infrastructure where you can't receive
any money back if you have purchased
too much storage space.
 Disaster Recovery

One of the biggest advantages of cloud storage is the peace of mind

that comes from constant storage backups made to a secure offsite
location. If your on premise storage infrastructure breaks down or
your hardware fails, the cloud makes disaster recovery, much simpler.
 Disadvantages
Drag and drop Internet dependency

The drag and drop option may
move your original data from
one location to another, so make
sure instead of using the drag
and drop option. Simply use the
copy and paste method.
Without the internet, you cannot
access your data while
downloading the file from cloud
storage. If there is an internet
failure, it might corrupt the data
which you were downloading.
Data security and privacy
Many cloud storage vendors lack
data security and privacy fields,
and there are many cases where
the data from the cloud storage
gets leaked.
Expensive cloud storages
Most of the best cloud services
are expensive; this is because
they are specially designed for
business purposes. If you go for a
less expensive plan, you might
have to compromise with some
of the features.
