Mechanical Properties of Solids
Mechanical Properties of Solids
Some bodies show change in dimension till the force is applied but regain
original dimension when forces are removed. e.g. when force is applied to
rubber cord it shows increase in length but regain its original length
when
force is removed.
This property of body regaining its original dimension back when applied
ELASTICITY & IT’S EXPLANATION
Elasticity.
when deforming forces are remove are called elastic bodies e.g. metal.
ORIGIN OR CONCEPT OF
ELASTICITY
Elasticity can be explained on the basis of internal restoring forces which are
produced within the body. All solids consists of atoms and molecules situated at
This gives rise to internal restoring force which are equal and opposite to the
deforming forces.
When external applied forces are removed internal restoring forces brings atoms
Plastic bodies :- The bodies which do not regain their original dimensions
after removal of deforming forces are called plastic body e.g. clay,
plasticine, putty.
The change in shape, size or both of a body arising due to external force is
called the deformation.
The force which is responsible for deformation is called deforming force.
It has been observed that, deformation directly proportional to deforming force.
deformation is of following types,
change in length in case of wire and cord
change in volume of body
change in shape of body.
When deformation of body takes place body said to be in strained condition
or
deformed state. In the deformed state, internal restoring forces are set up within
a body which are equal and opposite of the applied force.
