Hybrid Barley . The idea
● Inthe 1980’s and 1990’s many large agricultural
companies (Monsanto,DuPont, Shell, Pioneer)
were heavily focused on developing hybrid
cereals ~ wheat.
● In the early 1990’s the NFC breeding team in UK
were part of Ciba Seeds – who were also actively
looking at hybrid wheat.

We asked “why not hybrid barley?”

and the project began….
First steps of Syngenta hybrid barley

● 1992
-A literature search uncovered a PHD thesis from America outlining
a barley CMS hybrid production system.
-System originally discovered by Finnish Professor from wild barley
relative collected from Middle East as a source of mildew
resistance.

● 1993
-Paul Bury and David Thompson visited The University of Arizona to
evaluate system and start conversion to European germplasm
