TOPIC 15: Changing
Rational Numbers in the form
of Fraction to Decimal Form
RATIONAL NUMBERS
Any number that can be written in the form , where a
and b are integers and b  0, is called a rational
number. The phrase b  0 is a necessary restriction
because division by zero is not allowed. Whole
numbers, integers, fractions, percent, terminating and
repeating decimals are rational numbers since it can be
written in fractional form.
Illustration 1:
Study the example below:
1  10 = 0.1
1  100 = 0.01
1  1,000 = 0.001
1  10,000 = 0.0001
1  100,000 = 0.00001
CONCEPT 1
To express rational numbers in fraction form which have powers
of 10 as denominators to decimal form, we just remove zero
depending on the number of digits in the numerator from the
zeroes of the denominator and that will be the number of zeroes
after the decimal point. Just copy the numerator after putting the
zeroes.
Note: This is only applicable if the given is a proper fraction
Illustration 2:
Study the example below:
CONCEPT 2
To express rational numbers in fraction form
which do not have powers of 10 as
denominators to decimal form, just divide the
numerator by the denominator
