Cultivation Practices for Tomato

World and India scenario

China ranks first in Tomato production and India

ranks second in production
world production for tomatoes in 2017 was
182,301,395 MT.
In India the total tomato production was 19,759
thMT from an area of 789 thHa during 2017-
18.
Other names:

Wolf Apple
Flower cluster is
known as :Truss
Flavr Savr
• The flavr savr tomato was the first genetically
engineered food approved for human
consumption in 1993.
Sometimes fruit cracking is also happen because of of long dry and water stress, so
avoiding long dry and water stress is good for tomato fruits.

At the time of fruit set, bright sunshine is very good for colour of fruits, because
bright sunshine helps to develop dark red coloured fruits.
Seed rate: For OPV 300-400g/ha
For hybrid 100-150g/ha

Seed treatment: Seed is treated with Captan or Thiram or

Ceresan @ 2g/kg of seeds.
Nursery preparation:
Seedlings are grown before one months of transplanting on raised beds of 60-100 cm width
and of convenient length.

Soil solorization of nursery bed by covering them with white transparent polythene sheet for
one month should be done in hot summer months. It will kill the disease causing organisms
like fungus, bacteria, nematode as well as insects and seeds of weeds.

For one m2 of nursery area apply 5kg well rotten FYM and 20 g of each N, P and K fertiliser,
and also apply 2.5g carbofuran or 200 g of neem cake and 10-25g Tricoderma.

While preparing the nursery beds, neem cake /castor cake/ neam leaf/ castor leaf/ pongamia
leaf/ calotropis leaf has to be incorporated @ 400 g/m2 for protection against nematoads.

Cover the nursery bed with fine nylon net to escape the damage by virus transmitting insects.

After sowing the seeds, mulch with paddy straw and irrigate with a rose-can daily in the
morning. Remove the mulch immediately after germination of the seeds.

Hardening is done 4-5days before transplanting by the following methods

1. By withholding irrigation 4-5 days before transplanting.
2. By applying NaCl solution @4000PPM
3. By spraying Cycocel @ 2000PPM.
Heavy irrigation is done on the previous day of transplanting.
Gap filling has to be done at 7th day after transplanting.

Around 4-5 days before transplanting

Fertilizer application: The fertilizer dose depends upon the fertility of soil and amount of
organic manure applied to the crop. Generally, application of 120 kg N, 80 kg P 2O5 and 60 kg
K2O per hectare is recommended for open pollinated variety and 180 kg N, 100 kg
P2 O5 ,100kg K2O for hybrids. Half dose of N and full dose of P and K is given at the time of
planting. The balance half of N is given as top dressing 30 days and 50 days after
transplanting.
Borax 10 kg and Zinc sulphate 50 kg / ha to prevent fruit cracking.
Chlormequat chloride
Micronutrient spray
Foliar spray of ZnSO4 @ 0.5 % thrice at 10 days interval from 40 days after
planting.
Spray 19:19:19 + Mn @ 1 % at 60 days after planting.
