 Before
It was common among laundresses and
housewives to wash garments with animal
fat soap and scrub them on a board. The
women had to wash in the vicinity of a
nearby river, or on a stone floor, bricks and
in a drainage channel. Clothes were hung
on public clotheslines. Winters were much
more demanding, shelter to dry clothes in
rooms heated by an oven. Also, everything
had a routine. On Mondays the clothes were
separated into white, colored and wool. The
women had to remove the decorations and
buttons from the garments before washing
them. Hard work for sure. White clothes had
to be washed up to three times. Colored and
woolen garments were washed in cold
water.
