Direction of conveying
The handling capacity

It is determined by:
• Diameter of the helix
• Pitch of the helix
• Rotational speed
• Loading (filling degree)
• Nature of the material to be handled
Capacity Equation
Im=60   (/4) D2 S n
Where:
- Im: Conveyed material flow rate (t/h)

- : Conveyed material density (t/m3) : Filling Degree

- D: Screw diameter (m)
- S: Screw pitch (m) – ( S=D for easily movable materials
S=0.8D for poorly movable materials)
- n: rotational speed (rpm)
Since the tangential speed “V” is normally (1 – 1. 5 m/s),
the rotational speed can be estimated from: n = 60 (V/S)

Description Examples 

Flour grain, dry

Light non‑abrasive and
pulverised coal, 0.45
free‑flowing materials
cereals

Fine‑ grained or small‑ sized

Coal, coarse salt,
materials which are not quite free 0.25 - 0.3
sand, Cement
flowing

Heavily abrasive, tough materials

containing hard lumps with poor Ash, gravel, clinker 0.15
flow ability
Screw handling capacity
The total power “P” necessary for the shaft of the screw
conveyor is determined

P= Im ( L + H) /367 + 0.05 D L

Where:
L: Conveying length (m)
H: Lifting height (m)
: Progress resistance coefficient ( for: cement =1.9 ; coke &
sand =3.0 )
