WHAT IS Olympics

 The Olympic Games are an athletic festival that originated in ancient Greece and
were revived in the late 19th century. They are the world’s foremost sports
competition and include athletes from all over the world.
 a sports festival held every four years in different venues, instigated by the
Frenchman Baron de Coubertin (1863–1937) in 1896. Athletes representing more
than 200 countries compete for gold, silver, and bronze medals in more than

presidency of Juan Antonio Samaranch before the arrival of his
successor Jacques Rogge. These were also the second Olympic
Games to be held in spring, and to date the most recent Games
not to be held in its more traditional summer slot. The 2000
Games received universal acclaim, with the organization,
volunteers, sportsmanship, and Australian public being lauded in
the international media. Bill Bryson of The Times called the
Sydney Games "one of the most successful events on the world
stage", saying that they "couldn't be better". James Mossop of
the Electronic Telegraph called the Games "such a success that
any city considering bidding for future Olympics must be
wondering how it can reach the standards set by Sydney", while
