Changes in

The
State of Matter
A. PHYSICAL CHANGE – is a change in
the way matter looks.
- it is a change in the size, shape, state
or appearance of matter.
Examples: cutting, melting, freezing,
evaporation, condensation
1. Melting – it is the process by which
solids turn into liquids.
- solids melt because of heat
Examples:
Crayons, candle wax, butter, margarine,
lard
2. Freezing – the process by which
liquids turn to solids when they are
cooled.
Examples:
water becomes ice when it is frozen
Liquid wax, butter, lard, crayon and
margarine become solids when they are
cooled
3. Evaporation – the process by which
liquid turns into gas
4. Condensation – the process by which
gas turns to liquid.
- cooling air causes water vapor to
change to liquid form
5. Sublimation- process of changing solid
into gas without passing the liquid form.
B. Chemical change – causes matter to
become a new kind of matter.
Examples: rusting, burning, digestion,
decomposition
