Basic Calculus
Week
1 Illustrating Limits of a
Function

After going through this learning material, you are expected to:
1.) illustrate the limit of a function using table of values and graph of the
function;
2.)distinguish between and f(c);
3.) illustrate the limit laws; and
4.) apply the limit laws in evaluating the limit of algebraic functions
(polynomial, rational and radical).

Symbol representing limit function

“value of x approaches”

Read as: “The limit of f(x) as x approaches c”

Limit is defined as the unique real value that f(x) will approach
as x approaches c.

Limits

“The limit of 2 + 4x as x approaches 4”

To evaluate this limit,
1. First way: Use table of values.
Evaluate in two ways- values on the left and right side of the given c.
from the left side from the right side

*note: limit of the of the left and right side should be equal,
if not, limit does not exist (written as DNE).
2. The other way is by using the limit theorems.
