(LESSON 1)
THE MEANING OF HISTORY
• History is the past as it is described in written documents and
the study thereof. Events occurring before written records are
considered prehistory. "History" is an umbrella term that
relates to past events as well as the memory, discovery,
collection, organization, presentation, and interpretation of
information about these events.

• The incompleteness of records has limited man's knowledge of

history. means historians’ claims may remain variable as there
can be historical records that could be found or discovered,
which may affirm or refute those claims that they have
already.
• History as the Subjective Process of Re-
creation Historians must aim at being verisimilitude - the
appearance of being true or real. Historical Method and
Historiography The process of critically examining and
analyzing the records and survivals of the past is here
called the historical method.
• Historical method is the collection of
techniques and guidelines that historians use to
research and write histories of the past.
