Objectives
• Analyze the curve-time temperature graph.

• Read the temperature for the change of phase.

• Read the composition of the alloy tested.

• Describe the behavior of the time-temperature curve.

• Difference between the published eutectic temperature and the experimental

temperature obtained in the laboratory.
Theory
• The phase diagram is a crucial part of metallurgy.

• It shows the equilibrium states of a mixture, so that given a temperature and

compositionit is possible to calculate which phases will be formed, and in what
quantities. As such it is veryvaluable to be able to construct a phase diagram and
know how to use it to predict behavior of materials.

• The main theory behind phase diagrams is based around the latent heat that is evolved
when mixture is cooled, and changes phase. This means that by plotting graphs of
temperature against time for a variety of different compositions, it should be possible
to see at what temperature the different phases form.
Equipment
• Computer with National Instrument Data Acquisition Card.

• NI SCXI signal conditioner modules & Lab view software program.

• Thermocouple Type K. & Furnace 1200 C.

• Crucible, Zinc and Tin metal 99.999% pure.

• PPE: thermal globes, face shield cover, handle scissors.

• Stand support for the hot surfaces.

Experimental Procedure
Experimental Procedure
Experimental Procedure
1. Weight the crucibles.
2. In a crucible pour 100 grams of zinc, and add 100 grams of tin.
3. Homogenize the sample using a glass rod.
4. In a crucible mix the zinc and the tin in a proportion of 50 grams zinc and 150 grams tin.
5. Homogenize the sample.
6. Set the temperature of the furnace 700 C.
7. Pre-heat the furnace to the selected temperature for the Zn-Sn alloy.
8. When the temperature are reached introduce the crucible with the sample into the furnace and maintain it for
about 25 minutes or until all sample change to liquid.
9. Turn on the computer and load the LabView program.
10. Program the furnace to cool at a rate of 1.5 C/seg.
11. Insert the Thermocouple at the alloy.
12. Start the program to monitor the temperature at the sample as a function of time.
13. When all samples has solidified stop the program.
14. Save the data and export the data to any program to create a graph of time-temperature relation.
15. Using the generated curve and the phase diagram Zinc-Tin verify that st the plates the alloy change from liquid to
solid.
16. Repeat procedure for another alloy.

Conclusion

• After calculations we can see error from the comparison

between face diagram graph & time temperature graph.

• Could be reload error due to poor terminal thermocouple

connection.

• One of the graph show up only an Eutectoid Solidification

phace meaning that the specimen had one pure element.
