 A professional translator has responsibility not only towards clients but also
towards the society.

 Professionally, it becomes imperative that translators make an earnest effort to

offer the highest quality in their professional work.

 All of the translator’s projects must be reliable and deliver the exact idea and
structure of the original text
 ACCURACY AND IMPARTIALITY

 The translator must make substantial efforts to translate the text accurately and to convey
the exact sense or meaning between peoples and cultures reliably

 Preservation of the meaning, sense, style and format of the original document is one of the
prime concerns of a professional translator

 Any conflict of interest that may affect the translation on the part of the translator must be
taken as a personal bias and must be avoided with impartiality
 CONFIDENTIALITY AND TRUST

 Confidentiality and privacy of the information must be maintained

 Any privileged or confidential information included in the

documents to be translated must be kept in secret

 It is a translator’s moral duty not to reproduce, disclose or divulge any

personal or confidential information of the client or the document
LIMITATION AND DISCIPLINE OF PRACTICE

 The translator must disclose his qualifications, skills and aptitude correctly and
truthfully to the client knowing his professional limitations

 He must not accept assignments that surpass his skills and expertise

 Timely completion of project is also compulsory for the translator to avoid inflicting
any kind of loss to the client
 ACCOUNTABILITY
 The translator must make every possible effort to search for and rectify the errors
made by him even when the project has been completed

 In this regard self accountability becomes a moral obligation in order to evade

possible legal responsibility and risk
 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
 The Translator must improve his aptitude, skills and knowledge on continuous basis

 Being a professional, he must improve translation skills at every possible

opportunity by seeking to learn language, specialized areas and translation
practices

 He should learn new terminology and evaluate himself constantly regarding his
performance
 RESPECT FOR ALL PARTIES
 The translator should show genuine respect for people and cultures involved in the
translation process.

 Creating self-respect as regards one’s work, acknowledging the significance of the

translation agency and having concern for clients is part of quality professionalism.

 Respect for copy rights and intellectual property of others is also a moral
consideration.
