I Do / We Do
Multipliers are the decimal equivalents of a
percentage

To calculate a percentage or a percentage

change, multiply by the decimal equivalent of
the percentage that represents the answer

i.e. a 10% increase means the answer

represents 110%

Repeated Percentage Changes Saturday 10 February 2024

I Do / We Do
If you multiply by 2, then 2 again, then 2 again, what
single value could you multiply by instead? 8

This comes from 2 x 2 x 2 … 23 = 8

The starting value does not change this concept

(note the index is the number of repetitions

We can apply this logic to multipliers (since we are

also multiplying by the same value repeatedly)

I Do / We Do
Imagine increasing at a rate of 5% each year, over 4 years

The multiplier for a 5% increase would be... 1.05

Rather than multiply this 4 times in a chain of

calculations, lets give it an index of 4… (note
we are not multiplying by 4!!)

1.054 = 1.21550625 (note, this is a 21.55% rise not 20%)

This gives us the multiplier for the repeated change

I Do / We The % does not need to be the same throughout...

Do
What about a 2.1% increase then a 3.1% increase...

1.021 & 1.031

We use powers if the % is the same for each
repetition, however if they are different, we
multiply the multipliers together “manually”

1.021 x 1.031 = 1.052651

This gives us the multiplier for the repeated change

Abi deposited £160 in a bank.
She earned
20% compound interest every year.

How much was in the account after 3 years?

Multiplier:
= 100% + 20%
= 1.0 + 0.2
