Introduction to notes - Lesson 1
Hands up who can tell me what the difference between these
two lines are?
Short notes vs long notes

On your desk you have two cards,

when you hear a sound put up
whether you think it’s a long of short
sound.
Semi Breve
A Semi breve looks like this:

It lasts for 4 beat

Minim
A minim looks like this:

It lasts for 2 beat

We call it ‘Taw-Aw’
Clap one bar of MINIMS:

TAW -AW TAW - AW

Crotchet
A crotchet looks like this:

It lasts for 1 beat

We call it ‘Taw’
Clap one bar of CROTCHETS:

TAW TAW TAW TAW

Quavers
Quavers look like this:

There 2 in each beat

We call them ‘TEE-TEE’

Clap one bar of quavers:

Tee- Tee Tee- Tee Tee- Tee Tee-Tee

The Staff
Music is written on five lines and four spaces called the staff.
Beats in music
When we write rhythms we draw lines vertically on the stave. This breaks the
stave into bars. Like so:
Beats in music
This year your rhythms will be in 3 or 4 time.
4 4

This is shown at the start of a piece of music and called a TIME SIGNATURE
Time Signature
The number on top represents how many.
And the number at the bottom represents the type of note. EG 4 at the
bottom represents crotchet beats. As 4 crotchets make up one semibreve.
3 means 3 crotchet beats and 4 means 4 crotchet beats
4 4
Time Signature

We would count 1 2 3 / 1 2 3/ 1 2 3 /
This can be made up a number of different
ways eg. a crotchet and a minim/ 3
crotchets/3 pairs of quavers

Resting
Music is not all about noise though, music always contains rests too! These
can be breaks while other instruments play or it can be for singers to take a
breath!

Today we are going to learn about rests!

Remember all these rests are silent.

Semibreve Rest
Minim Rest
Crotchet Rest
To Do:
In your copies, write out 12 minim rests, 12 crotchets rests, 12 semibreve rests
on individual lines.

It should look like this:

Crochet 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 ….
Minim 111111111….

Heading: Rests

LO: Knowing how to write 3 different types of rests

What’s a dot?
A dot is something we add to a note to make it longer. It adds half the value of
the note.

EG. Semibreve is 4 beats. Half of 4 is 2. Dot adds 2. 4+2 = 6 beats

Minim is 2 beats. Half of 2 is 1. Dot adds 1. 2+1 = 3 beats

Quavers
Quavers are the quicker notes we clap, play or sing.

We have previously studied pairs of quavers/quavers.

But we can have shorter notes than this. We call this semi quavers.

We add an extra tail!

Semi Quavers
In 4 time or 3 time we write this 2 ways. Remember 2 semi quavers makes 1 quaver
4 4
