PRE-ENGINEERED

BUILDING

PRE-ENGINEERED BUILDING
Pre-Engineered Buildings (PEB) are
buildings that are engineered at a factory
and assembled at the site.
Built-up sections are fabricated at the
factory to the exact size, transported to
the site and assembled at the site with
bolted connections.
These structures are sometimes called
'metal boxes' or 'tin sheds' by laymen -
they are essentially rectangular boxes
enclosed in a skin of corrugated metal

sheeting.
PRE-ENGINEERED BUILDING
Great speed is achieved because while the
foundations and floor slab are being
constructed, the beams and columns - the
structural system - are being fabricated in
the factory. Once the foundations and
floor are done, the columns are shipped to
the site, lifted into place by cranes, and
bolted together.

COMPONENTS

COMPONENTS
The pre-engineered building is constructed with
different components and connections. Pre-engineered
buildings consist of different structural Steel members
which are as follows:
1. Primary Frame
The Primary frame which is used in PEB construction
is an assembly of built-up sections that form framing
and consists of trusses or castellated beams.
2. Secondary Structural Elements
The secondary structural elements are cold-formed
members in different shapes such as Z and C etc.
3. Roof and Wall Panels
The tin Shades and curtain walls made up of Glass
and rolled-formed Steel are generally used in roof and
wall panels.

COMPONENTS
4. Sandwich Panels
Sandwich panels are made up of three layers in which an all aluminium core is
inserted between two aluminum sheets. Components of Industrial Building
The different components of industrial buildings are as follows:
• Purlins • Bracket
• Sag rods • Column and Column base
• Principal Rafters • Girt Rods
• Roof Truss • Bracings
• Gantry Girders

STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS
This system consists of factory fabricated and
factory-painted steel column and beam
segments that are simply bolted together at site.
The columns and beams are custom-fabricated
I-section members that have an end plate with
holes for bolting at both ends.

ERECTION
The painted steel sections are lifted into place by
crane, and then bolted together by construction
workers who have climbed to the appropriate
position.
Usually, each connection calls for six to twenty
bolts to be installed. Bolts are to be tightened
to exactly the right amount of torque using a
torque wrench.

FOUNDATIONS AND FLOOR
SLAB
The foundations for pre engineered metal buildings are made
with conventional concrete systems, usually open foundations.
Since these structures are usually quite large, they attract a fair
amount of wind forces. Wind can cause a net upwards force on
a building, called uplift.
Since these structures are very light the foundations are
designed to firmly anchor the structures to the ground,
preventing them from being blown away by the wind.
The floor system for industrial and storage buildings is usually a
thick (about 8" to 12" / 200 to 300mm) concrete grade slab
that rests directly on the prepared earth beneath it. The
concrete can be topped with a thin, abrasion resistant smooth
coating called an epoxy floor or polyurethane floor if desired.

CLADDING AND ROOFING -
THE BUILDING ENVELOPE
The most economical cladding for these structures is
light corrugated metal sheeting, on both the roof and
the external walls. These steel sheets, barely 0.5mm
thick, are coated with an aluminum-zinc alloy for
corrosion protection on both sides, and come with an
attractive, durable paint finish on the outside.
These sheets are installed over a grid of purlins, a
steel member that rests on the main structural frame
and supports the roofing material. In pre-engineered
buildings, cold formed Z sections are the member of
choice for purlins.

CLADDING AND ROOFING -
THE BUILDING ENVELOPE
Before installing the sheets, contractors will
install layers of insulation and vapor barriers.
Rolls of glass wool or mineral wool are the
most common type of insulation for such
buildings. Since there is no inner wall over
which to fix these layers, a layer of galvanized
chicken wire mesh is first laid over the purlins.

ADVANTAGES
There are many advantages of Pre Engineered Buildings, which are as follows,
 Quality control is the main advantage as all the structural member are engineered
beforehand, standards of different codes also taken into consideration components are made
in factory under the supervision of Quality Control Engineer.
 Lower cost due to the saving in design, manufacturing and on-site erection cost.
 Minimizing time of construction due to the use of software for design of the structural
components.
 Low Maintenance due to use of standard quality of paints over steel members , which
increases the ability to withstand & finally the maintenance cost will be low as compare to
conventional steel building.
 Quick Erection, as all the members are Pre Manufactured & skilled labor is used for
connections of different components.
 Warranty on PEB, mostly warranty period of 20 years given by manufactures for PEB.

DISADVANTAGES:
Although PEB has many advantages in the field of Industrial structure still there are
some
demerits of Pre-Engineered Buildings, which are as follows,

 Rusting / Corrosion Sensitive, if the quality of steel used or paint used for coating
steel members is not of good quality, then it can damage the structure and thus
reduce the life of the structure.
 Insulation Cost, as insulating the building to an agreeable benchmark will
furthermore add to your construction costs.
 Appearance, Steel Sections can be unattractive when left exposed.
