SPRING FORCE

SPRING FORCE
When a metal spring is stretched or compressed, it is displaced from its
equilibrium position. As a result, it experiences a restoring force that tends
to retract the spring back to its original position. This force is called the
spring force. It is a contact force that can be found in elastic materials

The spring force formula is expressed through the
equation: F = – kx. As a formula, it reworks Hooke's
Law and is expressed through the equation: k = – F/x.
Where k is the spring constant, F is the force applied
over x, and x is the displacement by the spring
expressed in N/m

AS USUAL, THIS VECTOR EQUATION CAN BE WRITTEN IN TERMS OF
COMPONENTS; IN PARTICULAR,FOR THE X- COMPONENTS, WE CAN
WRITE.
=-K(X-
THE CONSTANT K IS BY DEFINITION ALWAYS POSITIVE. THE
NEGATIVE SIGN IN FRONT OF K INDICATES THAT THE SPRING FORCE
IS ALWAYS DIRECTED OPPOSITE TO THE DIRECTION OF THE
DISPLACEMENT FROM THE EQUILIBRIUM POSITION. WE CAN
CHOOSE THE EQUILIBRIUM POSITION TO BE =0, ALLOWING US TO
WRITE.

THIS SIMPLE FORCE LAW IS CALLED HOOKE’s LAW, AFTER THE

BRITISH PHYSICIST ROBERT HOOKE (1635-1703) A TEMPORARY OF
NEWTON AND THE CURATOR OF EXPERIMENTS FOR THE ROYAL
SOCIETY.
