WORK AND POWER

REVIEW
 Determine the mass of an object on top of a 30-
degree inclined surface if the surface exerts a 300 N
normal force to the object.
WORK
WORK (W) – the product of constant force F and the
displacement (d).

W=Fxd

The greater the force, the greater the work done.

The greater the displacement, the greater the work done.
WORK
WORK = Force x displacement
= Fcos θ • d
= F•d•cosθ
= (kg • m/s2)(m)
= kg • m2/s2
= Newton • meter
= Joule
1. Lifting a stack of books.
2. Pushing a stalled car.
3. Pulling a sofa.
 POSITIVE WORK - if the force that caused the object’s
motion has the same direction with its displacement.
 NEGATIVE WORK - if the force that caused the object’s
motion has an opposite direction with its displacement.
 ZERO WORK - if the direction of the applied force is
perpendicular to the object’s displacement.
Moving a chair
Take a box. Lift it straight up & move forward
Trying to catch a heavy object, hands move down
SAMPLE PROBLEM
How much work was done by a constant 100 N force
applied to an object if it was moved 1 kilometer from
the initial position.
SAMPLE PROBLEM
How much work is done on a vacuum cleaner pulled 3.0
meter by a force of 50.0 Newton at an angle of 30.0 degrees
above the horizontal?
SAMPLE PROBLEM
The baseball player does 1234 Joules of work when hitting a
baseball into left field. Assuming the baseball landed 100
meters away from home plate, how much force did the player
use to hit the ball?
POWER
 Power is a quantity that measures the rate at which work is
done or energy is transformed.
SAMPLE PROBLEM
 What power is consumed in lifting a 70.0-kilogram robber
1.6 meters in 0.50 seconds?
SAMPLE PROBLEM
 What is the power output of the stickman that pushes the
box 5 meters in 3 seconds with a constant force of 12 N?
SAMPLE PROBLEM
 What is the power output if 12N of force was applied on an
object at an angle of 25° above the horizon to move an
object 5 meters horizontally in 3 seconds.
