Viipuri Library

Despite being one of the seminal works of modern Scandinavian architecture, Alvar Aalto’s Viipuri
Library languished in relative obscurity for three-quarters of a century until its media breakthrough in
late 2014. Its receipt of the World Monuments Fund/Knoll Modernism Prize for a recent renovation
was covered by news outlets around the world, bringing the 1935 building previously unseen levels of
attention and scrutiny.

cantilevered terraces over a waterfall. The open floor plan seamlessly
integrates indoor and outdoor spaces. Horizontal lines, natural materials like

In the commune of Ronchamp, slightly south of east of Paris,

sits one of Le Corbusier’s most unusual projects of his career,
Notre Dame du Ronchamp, or more commonly referred to as
Ronchamp.
The Viipuri Library, designed by Alvar Aalto in 1935, features a functional open floor plan with distinct
functional zones. The central atrium, characterized by a large skylight, serves as a focal point. The building
incorporates a curved red-brick tower, emphasizing a horizontal design that integrates with the landscape.
Aalto's attention to lighting and custom furniture design contributes to a cohesive aesthetic. The library
showcases an innovative use of materials, including white plaster, brick, and wood, creating a harmonious
and tactile experience. Despite historical changes, the library remains a significant example of Aalto's
modernist vision and commitment to functional, human-centered design.
