A COMPLEX ISSUE
The impacts of climate change on different sectors of society are interrelated. Drought can harm food
production and human health. Flooding can lead to disease spread and damages to ecosystems and
infrastructure. Human health issues can increase mortality, impact food availability, and limit worker
productivity. Climate change impacts are seen throughout every aspect of the world we live in.
However, climate change impacts are uneven across the country and the world– even within a single
community, climate change impacts can differ between neighborhoods or individuals. The projections
of climate change-impacted future are not inevitable. Experts believe there is still time to avoid the
most negative outcomes by limiting warming and reducing emissions to zero as quickly as possible.
Additionally, lowering emissions will lessen harmful impacts to human health, saving countless lives
and billions of dollars in health-related expenses.

INFRASTRUCTURE

Physical infrastructure includes bridges, roads, ports, electrical grids, broadband internet, and other
parts of our transportation and communication systems. It is often designed to be in use for years or
decades, and many communities have infrastructure that was designed without future climate in
mind. But even newer infrastructures can be vulnerable to climate change.
Extreme weather events that bring heavy rains, floods, wind, snow, or temperature changes can
stress existing structures and facilities. Increased temperatures require more indoor cooling, which
can put stress on an energy grid. Sudden heavy rainfall can lead to flooding that shuts down
highways and major business areas.

QUESTIONS
If climate change can't be stopped, could Earth still be able to sustain
life? What will happen to the next generation to come?

The answer to these questions now lies in our hands. Most especially the youth.
WHY US? WHY WE SHOULD BE INVOLVED?
It is because the youths of today are the future and the people of tomorrow. It's the youths of
today that will serve as the foundation for the next generation to come.

What do you think is the best way to convince people that

climate change is happening?

1. MAKE IT FEEL PERSONAL, URGENT, AND LOCAL

For most people, climate change still seems like a fairly abstract problem–something that’s happening
far away, to polar bears or remote Pacific Islanders, or something that won’t really happen until the
distant future.
2. BE POSITIVE.
The usual story on climate is based around apocalyptic doom, and while the facts might justify that, it
makes people stop listening. People instinctively avoid stories about loss–whether that’s the loss of
endangered species, or the loss of everyday behaviors like eating meat or flying. They don’t want to
hear about carbon taxes. Attempts at making people feel guilty tend to backfire, and just make them
feel helpless or despairing.

3. GIVE PEOPLE A WAY TO TAKE VISIBLE, CONSISTENT ACTION

In a sense, anyone who isn’t acting on climate is probably in a little bit of denial. It’s easy to
rationalize non-action: What difference does it really make if one person decides to drive or not to
recycle? But if we don’t take simple everyday actions, it might also mean that we’re less likely to
support broader climate policy.
4. REDUCE POLARIZATION
In the 1990s, climate wasn’t seen only as a liberal issue (and if anything could bring us together, why
wouldn’t it be the survival of our species and planet?). But the divide grew. Now, whether people
accept climate science has more to do with identity than anything to do with the science itself. People
look to their friends or experts with the same worldview for what to believe, and then they seek out
the news that supports that belief. The solution this suggests: If you want to convince someone in a
particular group to take action, you need to find a member of that group to share the message.

M O N D AY, FEBRUARY 1, 20XX 18

5. USE THE POWER OF SOCIAL NETWORKS.
Peer pressure is a powerful thing. In a classic study, researchers tested putting a sign in a hotel
room that said 75% of guests in that room had reused their towels. Reuse rose dramatically–
even though a similar sign, asking people to reuse their towels to save water, had little effect.
Humans want to be like those around us.

How can Youths help stop climate change?

Youths can help stop climate change in their own simple yet purposeful ways. Such as: joining
environmental organizations or groups; participating in various governmental, non-governmental, school
or community programs and projects against climate change; joining clean-up drives at school or in
community; participating in tree planting and go-green activities; garbage picking and recycling
initiatives;
 getting involved in environmental protests and campaigns; using social media like Facebook, twitter or
Instagram in promoting climate change and environmental awareness to the public
 limiting the use of plastics; helping report illegal activities to authorities
 walking or biking in short distances instead of riding fueled vehicles
 segregating garbage at home and lastly, encouraging our friends, schoolmates and our family to do what
we are doing.
