National Black/White Achievement
Gap
 In 2007, Math scores for both Black
and White public school students in
grades 4 and 8 nationwide, as
measured by the main NAEP
assessments of the National
Assessment of Educational Progress
(NAEP), were higher than in any
previous assessment, going back to
1990.
 Also, According to NAEP for grade 8,
reading scores for both Black and White
students were higher in 2007 than in
the first reading assessment year,
1992, as well as the most recent
previous assessment year, 2005.
Strategies for Closing Achievement
Gaps
 Extend opportunities for learning
 Reach out to families of students
 Enhance cultural competence
 Adequate funding
 Supportive learning environment in
classroom
Chatham County
 Chatham County public high schools
scored a 68.3 on a 100 point scale. Middle
schools scored a 70.9 and elementary
schools scored 76. Statewide the average
high school, middle school and elementary
scores were 73.6, 81.4 and 83.4
respectively.
Achievement Gap in Georgia
 In previous years, the Quality Counts report
gave states an overall ranking (Georgia
ranked 7th in the nation for the past two
years) but it does not compile overall state
rankings this year.
