Introduction
• Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is a condition that can occur when
small blood vessels become damaged and inflamed. This damage can
cause clots to form in the vessels all through the body.
Clinical Features

• Occur in children <4 years old


• Initial event is Diarrhea
• After 5-10 days of diarrhea – pallor
• Weakness
• Oliguria
Diagnosis

• Peripheral smear:- evidence of


hemolysis : lyses RBCs
• Low platelets
• Elevated blood urea & serum creatinine
• Coombs negative
• Stool culture :- to isolate the bacteria
• PCR :- detect bacterial antigen
• Also, if stool culture is negative,
demonstrate presence of shiva toxin by
ELSA
Treatment

• His is self limiting condition


• Treatment is supportive
• Antibiotics:- no role in management
• Antibiotics lyse the bacteria- release of
performed toxins that lead to worsening
of the disease
• Dialysis in severe cases
