Chemical Change
The change in which a new substance is
formed which has totally different properties
than the original substance are called a
chemical change.
About Chemical Change
• Chemical change are usually irreversible. The original
substance cannot be recovered in most of the cases.
• One or more new substance are formed during the change.
• New substance have different properties from the original
substance.
• Heat or light or both may be produced during the change.
• A Chemical change is also called a chemical reaction.
• Process like digestion and photosynthesis are also chemical
change.
Characteristics of chemical
change
•Change in state
•Change in colour
•Formation of precipitate
•Evolution of gas
•Change in temperature 🌡️
Types of chemical changes
• Combination reactions
• Displacement reactions
• Double displacement reaction
• Decomposition reactions
• Precipitation reactions
• Neutralisation reactions
• Oxidation and reduction reactions
•Combination reactions
• A direct combination reaction is a reaction where
two or more elements or compounds combine to
form a single compound.
•Displacement reactions
• Displacement reaction is a chemical reaction in which a
more reactive element displaces a less reactive element
from its compound.

•Double displacement reactions

• A double displacement reaction is a type of reaction where
part of of one reactant is replaced by part of another
reactant.
Double displacement reaction take the form.
•Decomposition reactions
• A decomposition reaction can be defined as a chemical reaction
in which one reactant breaks down into two or more products.

•Thermal decomposition reactions

• Thermal decomposition reactions are those reactions which break
up or decompose on heating to form many products. This is
represented by a general formula format. Zinc
carbonate on heating decomposes to form Zinc oxide
and carbon dioxide.
Electric decomposition reactions
the charge per unit area that would be displaced across
a layer of conductor placed across an electric field.
Photolytic decomposition
reaction
It is actually a type of decomposition reaction in which
the reactant will break down just by the absorption of
the photons. In this, the photons will interact with the
target molecules for the breakdown.
Neutralisation reactions
A chemical reaction in which an acid and base
quantitatively react together to form a salt and water
as products
Oxidation and reduction
reactions
Oxidation–reduction reactions, commonly known as
redox reactions, are reactions that involve the
transfer of electrons from one species to another
Precipitation reactions
• A precipitation reaction is one in which dissolved substances react to
form one or more solid products.

• Now let us see one example of chemical change

in detail
Rusting of Iron (Fe)
Physical Change
Physical change is a type of change where the physical
properties of matter change. A change of state of matter,
change in colour, odour, solubility, etc.
