• The Story of Psalm 137
• The Jews lived in Judah, where Babylon was 1000 kilometers to the east. In 586
B.C., the soldiers from Babylon destroyed the capital city of Judah, Jerusalem.
They captured the people there as prisoners to Babylon. In 536 B.C. many of the
prisoners and their sons and daughters came back to Jerusalem. In 516 B.C.,
Persia (now Iran) destroyed Babylon.
• There were two great rivers in Babylon, the Tigris and the Euphrates. There
were also small rivers. They went between the Tigris River and the Euphrates
River. The Jews in the exile met by these rivers. They talked about Jerusalem
and Zion. Zion was one of the hills that they had built the city of Jerusalem on.
The psalmist remembered this when he went home. He also remembered that
they could not sing songs about the LORD in Babylon. Now he was home again.
And he hoped that somebody would destroy Babylon as Babylon had destroyed
Jerusalem.
• What Psalm 137 means:
• Verses 1 – 3: The psalmist was home again in Jerusalem. He remembered how
the people of Babylon made them sad. It made them sad when they asked them
to sing.
• Verses 4 – 6: They could not sing to the LORD in a foreign land. The right hand
played the harp, the tongue sang the words. God agreed to love and send help to
his people. They agreed to love and obey God. They were in Babylon because the
Jews had not obeyed God.
• Verses 7 - 9: Edom was a country to the southeast of Judah. It was an enemy of
Judah. When Babylon destroyed Jerusalem, Edom was very happy! Now the
psalmist says that soon someone will destroy Babylon. He was right! (Later the
Persian Empire conquered Babylon).

• The Impossible Dream (from the movie: “Man of La Mancha”)
Don Quixote’s the Quest and the Spanish Inquisition (Lyrics by
Joe Darion: In this song, Don Quixote explains his quest and
the reasons behind it ... in doing so, he captures the essence
of the play and its philosophical underpinnings.)
• To dream ... the impossible dream ...
• To fight ... the unbeatable foe ...
• To bear ... with unbearable sorrow ...
• To run ... where the brave dare not go ...
• To right ... the unrightable wrong ...
• To love ... pure and chaste from afar ...
• To try ... when your arms are too weary ...
• To reach ... the unreachable star ...
• This is my quest, to follow that star ...
• No matter how hopeless, no matter how far ...
• To fight for the right, without question or pause ...
• To be willing to march into Hell, for a Heavenly cause ...
• And I know if I'll only be true, to this glorious quest,
• That my heart will lie peaceful and calm,
• when I'm laid to my rest ...
• And the world will be better for this:
• That one man, scorned and covered with scars,
• Still strove, with his last ounce of courage,
• To reach ... the unreachable star ...

• “The Impossible Dream” (“The Quest”) is a popular song composed by
Mitch Leigh, with lyrics written by Joe Darion. It was written for the 1965 musical Man of La Mancha.
• In this song, Don Quixote explains his quest and the reasons behind it ... in doing so, he captures the
essence of the play and its philosophical underpinnings.
• The song is sung all the way through once in the musical by Don Quixote as he stands vigil over his
armor, in response to Aldonza’s question about what he means by “following the quest”.
• The song received the Contemporary Classics Award from the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame.
• American Pop Culture:
• The song is also related to the 1967 Boston Red Sox, as their winning season was dubbed “The
Impossible Dream”, too.
• During Senator Robert Kennedy’s campaign for the presidency in 1968, George McGovern introduced
him before a South Dakota speech by quoting from The Impossible Dream. In fact, the song was
Robert Kennedy’s favorite song. It was also a favorite of Ted Kennedy and the song was performed by
Brian Stokes Mitchell at his memorial service in 2009.

• Reflection on management:
• "Amazing Grace" is a Christian hymn written by John Newton (1725–1807),
published in 1779. Containing a message that forgiveness and redemption are
possible regardless of sins committed and that the soul can be delivered from
despair through the mercy of God. "Amazing Grace" is one of the most
recognizable songs in the English-speaking world.
• Newton wrote the words from personal experience. He grew up without any
particular religious conviction, but his life's path was formed by a variety of
twists and coincidences that were often put into motion by his recalcitrant
insubordination. He was forced to serve in the British Navy, and after leaving
the service, he became involved in the Atlantic slave trade. In 1748, a violent
storm battered his vessel so severely that he called out to God for mercy, a
moment that marked his spiritual conversion. However, he continued his
slavery career until 1754, when he ended his seafaring altogether and began
studying Christian theology, and finally becoming a clergyman.
• Battle Hymn of the Republic (American Civil War)
• Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord;
• He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
• He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword;

• Reflection on management:
• “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” is a hymn by American writer Julia Ward Howe
using the music from the song “John Brown’s Body”. The song links the judgment of the wicked at the
end of time (New Testament) with the American Civil War. Julia Howe’s “The Battle Hymn of the
Republic” was first published on the front page of The Atlantic Monthly in February 1862.
• Julia Howe was the wife of Samuel Howe, the renowned scholar in education for the blind. Samuel and
Julia were also active leaders in anti-slavery politics and strong supporters of the Union.
• This was one of Sir Winston Churchill’s favorite songs. At his request before he died, this song was
played at his funeral in St. Paul’s Cathedral in 1965. Singer Judy Garland performed this song on her
weekly television show in December 1963. Originally, she would like to dedicate this song to President
John F. Kennedy upon his assassination in November, but CBS would not let her, so she just performed
the song without mentioning JFK. Singer Whitney Houston also sang this song at her concert to the
American army called “Welcome Home Heroes” in 1991. The lyrics of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”
appear in Martin Luther King, Jr.’s sermons and speeches, such as “How Long, Not Long” on March 25,
1965, and his final sermon: “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop”, on April 3, 1968, the night before his
assassination – actually, this last sermon, Martin Luther King’s last public words, ends with the first lyrics
of the song, “Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.”
• All in all, “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” has been sung at the funerals of many VIPs, such as: Sir
Winston Churchill, Robert Kennedy, and Ronald Reagan. The Hymn was written during the American
Civil War, and since the lyrics are touching and moving, it often brings tears to the eyes of the audience.

• “Edelweisss” is a song from the musical “The Sound of Music”
(by Rodgers and Hammerstein). It is named after the
edelweiss, a white flower found high in the Alps. It is sung by
Captain Georg Ludwig von Trapp and his family during the
concert near the end of Act II as a defiant statement of
Austrian patriotism in the face of the pressure put on him to
join Nazi Germany.
• The song provides a metaphor of the edelweiss flower, as a
symbol of Austria that Captain von Trapp, Maria, and the
children would have in their hearts despite the Nazi
annexation of their homeland.

• [Anti-Vietnam War (anti-war folk song)]
• 1. Listen, children, to a story, That was written long ago,
• 'Bout a kingdom on a mountain, And the valley-folk below.
• On the mountain was a treasure, Buried deep beneath the stone,
• And the valley-people swore, They'd have it for their very own.
• * (CHORUS) Go ahead and hate your neighbor, Go ahead and cheat a friend.
• Do it in the name of Heaven, You can justify it in the end.
• There won't be any trumpets blowing, Come the judgement day,
• On the bloody morning after.... One tin soldier rides away.
• 2. So the people of the valley, Sent a message up the hill,
• Asking for the buried treasure, Tons of gold for which they'd kill.
• Came an answer from the kingdom, "With our brothers we will share
• All the secrets of our mountain, All the riches buried there."
• 3. Now the valley cried with anger, "Mount your horses! Draw your sword!"
• And they killed the mountain-people, So they won their just reward.
• Now they stood beside the treasure, On the mountain, dark and red.
• “One Tin Soldier” was an anti-war song in the 1960s (probably against the
Vietnam War) written by Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter. The Canadian
• pop group Original Caste first recorded the song in 1969.
• “One Tin Soldier” is about the story of a hidden treasure and two neighboring
peoples: the Mountain People and the Valley People. The Valley People had
heard that there was a treasure on the mountain, buried beneath a stone. They
sent a message to the Mountain People to share the treasure. When told that
they could share the treasure, the Valley People instead decided to invade the
Mountain People. After Killing all the Mountain People, the Valley People
moved the stone and found nothing but a simple message: “Peace on Earth”.
Ironically, the Valley People had destroyed the treasure in pursuit of it.
