Tidal Power , also called tidal energy ,is a form of
introduction hydropower that converts the energy of tides into useful
forms of power – mainly electricity. This is the only
form of energy whose source is the moon.
.

 TIDES

 Tides are the rise and fall of sea levels caused by the combined effects of the
gravitational forces exerted by the Moon and the sun and the Rotation of the
Earth.

 TIDAL POWER
.
 Tidal power is actuated by a turbine under water that
spins making the mechanical energy to electrical
through a generator that send the electrical energy to the
shore

Types if tidal Power plants

 There are currently three different ways to get tidal energy:

 Tidal streams
 Tidal barrages
 Tidal lagoons
Tidal Streams
Tidal streams are the periodic
horizontal movement of water.
These have the same astronomical
causes as tides, which move in a
vertical direction. The tidal stream
associated with a rising tide is
called the flood stream; that
associated with a falling tide is
called the ebb stream.
.

 For most tidal energy generators, turbines are placed in tidal streams. A tidal
stream is a fast-flowing body of water created by tides. A turbine is a machine that
takes energy from a flow of fluid. That fluid can be air (wind) or liquid (water).
Because water is much more dense than air, tidal energy is more powerful than
wind energy. Unlike wind, tides are predictable and stable. Where tidal generators
are used, they produce a steady, reliable stream of electricity.
Tidal Barrages
Another type of tidal energy
generator uses a large dam called
a barrage. With a barrage, water
can spill over the top or through
turbines in the dam because the
dam is low. Barrages can be
constructed across tidal rivers,
bays, and estuaries.
.

 Turbines inside the barrage harness the power of tides

the same way a river dam harnesses the power of a
river. The barrage gates are open as the tide rises.
At high tide, the barrage gates close, creating a pool, or
tidal lagoon. The water is then released through the
barrage’s turbines, creating energy at a rate that can
be controlled by engineers.

Tidal Lagoons
The final type of tidal energy
generator involves the
construction of tidal lagoons. A
tidal lagoon is a body of ocean
water that is partly enclosed by a
natural or manmade barrier. Tidal
lagoons might also be estuaries
and have freshwater emptying into
them.
.

 A tidal energy generator using tidal

lagoons would function much like
a barrage. Unlike barrages,
however, tidal lagoons can be
constructed along the natural
coastline. A tidal lagoon power
plant could also generate
continuous power. The turbines
work as the lagoon is filling and
emptying.
The advantages and disadvantages of Tidal energy
The key benefits of tidal power include the following:
 • Tides are easily predictable
 • Inexpensive to maintain
 • Reliable and renewable source of energy
 • High energy density than other renewable energy forms

The advantages 

• It produces no greenhouse gases or other waste
• Vertical-axis turbines and offshore turbines are inexpensive
to build and have less environmental impact
 • Tidal turbines are 80% efficient, which is higher than solar
or wind energy generators.
 • Barrages reduce the damage of high tidal surges on the
land.
Some other limitations of tidal power is as follows:
 • Initial construction cost is very high
 • Formation of silt behind the barrage
 • Effect on animals and plants living near tidal stations
 • Very few suitable sites for constructing barrages
The disadvantages
 • Disturbs migration of living creatures in the ocean
 • Water cannot be replenished, and hence dirt gets settled
within the coast
 • It produces power for only about 10 h of the day when
the tide is moving in and out.
