ANATOMICAL POSITION

• Standing erect, face forward,


arms at your sides with
palms to the front
• Always put a specimen in
the anatomical position (ie,
as it lies in your body while
you are in the anatomical
position)
PLANES OF REFERENCE
sagittal, midsagittal, parasagittal, coronal/frontal,
transverse/horizontal
• How do the planes help with identification?

• Sagittal plane – divides body into left and right

• Coronal plane – divides into anterior / posterior (front and back)

• Horizontal plane – divides into superior / inferior
