Animal Nutrition

Nutrition

▪ Refers to the series of processes by which an organism

takes in and assimilates food for promoting growth and
replacing worn – out or injured tissues
Nutrients

▪ Any feed constituents, or a group of feed constituents

of the same general chemical composition that aids in
the support of life
Digestion

▪ Refers to the breakdown of feed particles into

suitable products for absorption.

▪ This may includes mechanical forces, chemical

action and enzyme activity.

Absorption

▪ Refers to the transfer of substances from gastro-

intestinal tract (GIT) to the circulatory (blood or lymph)
system.
Metabolism

▪ It is the combination of anabolic and

catabolic reactions occurring in the body
with the liberation of energy.

▪ the process by which the body changes

food and drink into energy.
Enzymes

▪ It is a complex protein produced in living

cells that causes changes in other substances
within the body changed itself (organic
catalyst)

▪ Are proteins that help speed up metabolism,

or the chemical reactions in our bodies.
Gross Chemical
Composition of Plant
and Animal Tissue
Plant Tissues

▪ Meristematic Tissue

-rapid cell division, lengthening of shoots

and roots

Type:
• Apical – primary growth at root and shoot tips
• Lateral – secondary growth in trees and
shrubs
• Intercalary –secondary growth in monocot
stems
Plant Tissues

▪ Dermal Tissue

- for covering the plant body

- Single layer of cells called the epidermis in

herbaceous plants.

- Responsible for absorption, secretion of

cuticle , protection and control of gas
exchange
Plant Tissues

▪ Ground Tissue

- for support, photosynthesis and storage

- it includes parenchyma, collenchyma and sclerenchyma

Plant Tissues

▪ Vascular Tissue

- for conduction of water, food, and dissolved minerals, strengthens and

supports the plant
- this comprised of the xylem and the phloem, the main transport system
of plants
Plant Tissues

▪ Xylem

- Conducts water and dissolved

minerals from the roots.

Phloem
- Conducts dissolved food materials,
carbohydrate, in solution
Animal Tissues

▪ Epithelial Tissue (Covering)

▪ Connective Tissue

▪ Muscle Tissue

▪ Nervous Tissue
