FAVOURITE
INDIAN WRITER
By : SOHAM . M . SHETH
DHANPAT RAI SRIVASTAV

In the Lamhi village, Munshi Premchand was born on July 31st, 1880. (near
Varanasi). He wrote some well-known works in the early 20th century. He
departed us on October 8th, 1936, having helped others with his wonderful
works. His real name was Dhanpat Rai Srivastav, and Nawab Rai was his pen
name. He used his pen name to write everything. He finally decided to adopt
Munshi Premchand as his new name

SOME LESSER KNOW FACTS ABOUT
PREMCHAND

I. Did you know that certain places had to forbid the release of the one and only movie
Premchand ever wrote? The film "Mazdoor" was too real, not for the reasons we often
connect with cinema censorship today!

II. His writings include many articles, more than a dozen novels, close to 300 short stories, and
Hindi translations of a number of foreign literary classics.

II. Additionally, he served as Lucknow's Progressive Writers Association's inaugural president.

III. He left his position with the government to join Gandhi's noncooperation movement.

SIGNIFICANT WORKS

I. Karmabhoomi:
Set in 1930, this masterpiece by Premchand talks about the unity of Hindus and Muslim and theirexploitation by the British.
Karmabhoomi defined 'dharma' for the contemporary reader of those days and urged him to know the difference between real and
superficial acts of religion

II. Kafan
Premchand’s “Kafan” is a work of art that will last forever in human memory. There is a father-son team who discuss those who don't
work to support themselves and continually exploit their helplessness as a justification for their unending failures.

III. Gaban
Even though most of us are greedy, we all know that greed has no limitations. In this timeless work, Munshi Premchand discusses
how a person's unquenchable desire for gems may lead to moral and societal decay and heights of avarice that are unfathomable.

WHAT ASPIRES ME?

My favourite aspects of Premchand's writings are his engaging storytelling and use of straightforward
language. His books explore the issues facing the rural peasant classes. He refrained from using heavily
Sanskritized Hindi (as was the common practise among Hindi writers). This culture was altered by
Premchand. He discussed the lives of the common people—farmers, villagers who were poor and Dalits,
women, orphans, and the elderly—in his stories and novels. His stories reflected society rather than
being based in any kind of virtual world.
