Opioid harm in Australia
• 15 million prescription opioids were dispensed
• Misuse of pharmaceutical opioids is more common than heroin use
• Opioid poisoning hospitalizations have increased in recent years
• People in regional areas and lower socioeconomic groups have higher
use of and harms from pharmaceutical opioids
• Men aged 35-45 experience the highest rates of opioid harm
• Concurrent multiple drug use increased the risk of opioid related harm
with age
