Naval Orientation
History –
 26 Jan 1950 the Royal navy was re-designated as Indian
navy & Naval ensign was adopted

 National Flag had earlier taken place of Union Jack on 15


Aug 1947

 Soon after independence Cruiser INS Delhi & destroyers


Rajput, Rana & Ranjit joined IN.

 Subsequently 2nd cruiser, frigates, followed by acquisition


of Vikrant in 1961.

Goa Operation –
 First time IN ships were deployed for liberation
of Goa
 Portuguese war ship “ALBUQUERQUE” disabled

 Established command of the sea & was able to


enforce blockade of the Goa port

 Later in mid 60s fleet oil tanker acquired from


West Germany. With the addition of this oil
tanker the rang of the fleet increased as also its
capacity and endurance at sea.

Indo Pak – 71 War–

 With the change in Geo political situation in the


Indian Ocean more sophisticated ships and
submarines were added to IN during late 60s &
early 70s
 Navy played decisive role during Indo – Pak
conflict in the Arabian sea & bay of Bengal

Post 1971–
 Post 1971 the speed of acquisition increased
more ships, Subs and another Aircraft Carrier
Viraat joined IN
 The IN started building its own warships/Subs

 India increased warship building capability


phenomenally

 Also more sophisticated & technologically


superior ships /Subs & Aircrafts were acquired
making IN as one of the world class Navy

Present status–
 Modernisation of IN continuing at fast pace
 Indigenously built Nuclear submarine inducted, INS
Vikramaditya with 29K Mig as a formidable asset is
possessed by IN.
 LPD Jalashwa and stealth frigates are in service.
 More sophisticated & technologically superior ships /Subs
& Aircrafts are continuously being added to IN Fleets

 Navy has participated in many major operations post 71


such as Pawan, Cactus, Tasha, Talwar and various rescue
missions with in Indian region and neighbouring waters
for anti piracy ops.

 Natural Resources. Oceans have tremendous potential in


form of natural resources i.e. Oil, gas, minerals, mines,
fishes etc

Basic Role of Indian Navy–
 Navy is a branch of our country’s armed forces
comprising of ships, submarines and aircrafts.

 Sole agency to safe guard nations interests connected


with the oceans and sea

 India has vast oil resources i.e. Oil rigs off Mumbai High
and off Andhra coast which may be soft target for enemy
countries ships, s/ms and a/cs in the event of war

War Time Role of Indian Navy–
 To guard nations sea coast from external aggression

 To guard nations maritime interest i.e. Off shore oil fields


and other economic resources

 To keep sea lanes open for own trades

 To seek and destroy enemy ships, submarines and


aircrafts

Peace Time Role of Indian Navy–
 Aid to Civil Powers. When local administration is unable
to maintain law and order due to disturbance, Navy may
be called to assist the civil administration in restoring the
law and order

 Assistance during Natural calamities. When certain part


oft he country is his by natural disaster i.e. Flood,
earthquake, cyclone, Tsunami, draught, epidemic etc

 Distress at Sea. When ships and vessels at sea are in


distress i.e. Sinking of ship, the Navy is called upon to
rescue the crew and vessel if possible.

Peace Time Role of Indian Navy–

 Developing Good will. Navy play an important role to


foster goodwill between nations i.e. Ships visit to foreign
ports, which are called flag showing missions and are
very useful in developing understanding between
peoples of two countries.

 Miscellaneous. Navy also renders assistance in the


construction of dams or other underwater projectes or
search and rescue missions by sending divers and other
competent personnel.

Conclusion–

 Indian Navy has come a long way since Independence. It


has grown over the years both in terms of number and
quality of platform in order to become a three
dimensional Navy.
