Describe something that is alive…

Does it move?

Does it grow?

Does it reproduce?

These are all good questions, but can also hold

true for a flame!

Scientists have developed a list of characteristics

that all living things must have…some non-living
things may have some of these characteristics, but
not all of them!
Living Things Are Organized
One of the first things that scientists look for is structure.

All living things show an orderly structure, or organization.

All living things are composed of one or more cells.

Living Things Make More Living Things
For life to continue, living things must reproduce to make more
living things.
Living Things Change During Their Lives
Living things grow throughout their lives.
Living Things Adjust to Their Surroundings
Living things respond to the environment.

How does your body respond to the How does your body respond to the
environment when it is hot? environment when it is cold?
Living Things Adapt and Evolve
Living things adapt to their
environment so they have a better chance at survival.
Living Things Take in Nutrients and
Excrete Waste

Living things need energy and nutrients.

After they use nutrients, they excrete waste.

Can you name the characteristics of living
things?
