ORIGIN OF MY COMMUNITY
A community is composed of
people and different institutions
such as home, school, church, and
government. Every community has
its beginning.
The map shows the suburbs and other towns of
Provincia de Manila. This happened in the
middle of the 18th century when the Spaniards
started to expand their colonization. Before this,
Manila was one of the polities or chiefdoms in
1570. The other one was Tondo.
Here are the important dates on the origin of Manila:
June 24, 1571 - Miguel Lopez de Legazpi formally founded the Ciudad de
Manila (the City of Manila).
18th Century- Manila was completely enclosed in walls with its name as
Intramuros or "Walled City.“
July 1, 1901 - Act No. 183 was passed also known as the City Chart of
Manila or the Manila Charter.
January 1, 1942 - Executive Order 400 s. 1942 was issued creating the
City of Greater Manila by President Manuel L. Quezon.
November 7, 1975 - Metropolitan Manila was established through
Presidential Decree No. 824 s. 1975 by President Ferdinand E. Marcos.
May 29, 1976 - Presidential Decree No. 940 was signed as Metropolitan
Manila.
Maynila came from the word nilad, the name of a water plant
which grows in Pasig River.
Other communities have interesting beginnings, too.
Makati, just like any other community, has an interesting
origin. Old folks say that when the first governor-general of the
Philippines Miguel Lopez de Legazpi was exploring the place,
he asked the native people what the name of the place is. The
native people thought he was asking about the condition of the
Pasig River. They answered, "Makati, kumakati na" pointing to
the receding water. This means "Ebbing, the tide is ebbing."
Hence, the place is called Makati.
According to stories, the town of Pateros got its name from the word
pato (pato is the Spanish word for "duck"). This place is the duck-
raising capital of the Philippines. Others say Pateros came from the
word sapatero (shoemaker) because shoemaking is one of the industries
in Pateros.
San Carlos City in Pangasinan was formerly called
"Binalatongan“ because of the many monggo plants
in the area. Samar was taken from the word
Samad, which means "cut" or "wound. "This was
because of the rough physical features of the place.
Butuan, a part of Surigao, came from the word
batuan, a sour fruit. Others believed that it came
from the name of a chieftain Datu Bantuan.
Aside from stories, a community may be named or created
through legislation. Here are some examples of recently
