As roots continue to grow, they expand and exert
considerable pressure at the crack or joint where
they entered the pipe. The force exerted by the
root growth will break the pipe and may result in
total collapse of the pipe. Severe root intrusion and
pipes that are structurally damaged will require
replacement.

Acoustic Properties
An important acoustical property of wood is its
ability to damp vibrations. Wood has a cellular
network of minute interlocking pores which
converts sound energy into heat by frictional
and viscoelastic resistance.
Because of the high internal friction created by
the cellular pore network, wood has more
sound damping capacity than most structural
materials. Floor, ceiling and wall assemblies of
wood can provide effective economical sound
insulation and absorption when properly
utilized.

Room constructed with Drywall Partitions. Ate is studying

Here are a few ‘sound facts’ about today’s
drywall systems:
They are more effective at preventing sound transfer
between rooms than traditional masonry
They can meet Building Regulations requirements even
without any additional insulation between wall facings
They are regularly used in multiplex cinemas to provide
high performance sound separation between adjacent
auditoria
They allow appropriate sound performance to be
achieved using slimmer partitions – that means more
living space.
Plumbing/Electrical/Acoustics Questions
Situation: Bunso is watching Cartoons inside the Movie Room constructed
with Drywall Partitions. Ate is studying at the room adjacent the Movie
Room…
Why drywall is so effective
Drywall systems provide effective sound insulation because they are
designed to provide a physical barrier to sound, incorporate a sound
break and minimise reverberation.

The boards used are formulated to have the correct density to block
sound. Between the two sides of the partition there is an air cavity,
which interrupts the flow of sound. This applies irrespective of
whether or not additional insulation material is included. Because the
two sides of the partition are separate it is harder for impact sound to
pass through.

These characteristics mean that a typical drywall partition in a house

is 75mm thick. A comparable masonry wall would need to be 110mm
thick to achieve the same sound performance.

BRICKS
Thermal & Acoustic Insulation
Thermal Insulation: Brick generally exhibits better thermal
insulation property than other building materials like concrete.
Perforation can improve the thermal insulation property of bricks to
some extent. Besides, the Thermal Mass and moisture that the brick
has absorbed can help to keep the temperature inside the house
relatively constant. Brick absorbs and releases heat slowly and thus
keep the house cool during day-time and warm during night-time.
Acoustic Insulation: As far as acoustic insulation is concerned, brick
wall provides good sound insulation property due to its dense
structure. The thickness and density of brick will deaden noise
transmission and will deflect noise from streets, neighboring
homes, and jet planes. The sound insulation of brick work is
generally accepted as 45 decibels for a 4 1/2 inches thickness and
50 decibels for a 9 inches for the frequency ranges from 200 to
2,000 Hz.

a computer network that connects

Since almost all private branch

implies a “PABX.” Some
