WE JUDGE
OURSELVES
BY OUR
INTENTIONS.
AND OTHERS BY
THEIR ACTIONS.

MAED 210- Human Behavior in Organization

1.AWARENESS OF
PERCEPTUAL BIASES
 knowing that they exist can
reduce these biases to some
extent by making people
more mindful of their
thoughts and actions.

MAED 210- Human Behavior in Organization

-In general, people tend to
reduce their biases by knowing
themselves
– increasing awareness of their
own values, beliefs, and
prejudices.

 can be accomplished through
diversity awareness training
to minimize discrimination
by making people aware of it

2. IMPROVING
SELF-
AWARENESS
 A more powerful way is to help
peolple discover biases in their
own decisions and behaviour
 We need to be more open-
minded, and nonjudgmental
toward others

open area and reduce the

 Open: info about you
that is known to you and
others
 Blind: known to others
but not to you

 Hidden: known to you but
not to others

 Unknown: includes values,

beliefs, and experiences that
aren’t know to you or others

3. Meaningful

Interaction
 Self-awareness and mutual understanding can also
improve through meaningful interaction. The
contact hypothes is states that under certain
conditions, people who interact with each other
will be less prejudiced or perceptually biased
against one another. Spending time with a person
can improve your opinion and understanding of
that person to some extent.

MAED 210- Human Behavior in Organization

 Under specific conditions, this
hypothesis is event stronger:
participants should have close and
frequent interaction working toward a
shared goal when they need to rely on
each other and everyone should have
context and equal standing in that
context and should be engaged in a
meaningful task.

 In addition to reducing our reliance on
stereotypes, meaningful interaction improves
empathy towards others. Empathyrefers to a
person’s understanding of and sensitivity to
the feelings, thoughts, and situations of
others.
 Empathizing with others improves our
sensitivity to external causes of another
person’s performance and behaviour, thereby
reducing fundamental attribution error.
