What Are 21st Century Skills?
21st Century skills are 12 abilities that today’s students need to
succeed in their careers during the Information Age.
The twelve 21st Century skills are:
1.Critical thinking 7. Technology literacy
2.Creativity 8.Flexibility
3.Collaboration 9.Leadership
4.Communication 10.Initiative
5.Information literacy 11.Productivity
6.Media literacy 12.Social skills
The Three 21st Century Skill Categories
• Each 21st Century skill is broken into one of three categories:
• Learning skills
• Literacy skills
• Life skills
• Learning skills (the four C’s) teaches students about the mental processes required
to adapt and improve upon a modern work environment.
• Literacy skills (IMT) focuses on how students can discern facts, publishing outlets,
and the technology behind them. There’s a strong focus on determining trustworthy
sources and factual information to separate it from the misinformation that floods
the Internet.
• Life skills (FLIPS) take a look at intangible elements of a student’s everyday life.
These intangibles focus on both personal and professional qualities.
Category 1
Category 1. Learning Skills (4 C’s)

The 4 C's of 21st Century Skills are:


• Critical thinking: Finding solutions to problems
• Creativity: Thinking outside the box
• Collaboration: Working with others
• Communication: Talking to others
Category 2
Category 2. Literacy Skills (IMT)

The three 21st Century literacy skills are:

• Information literacy: Understanding facts, figures, statistics,


and data
• Media literacy: Understanding the methods and outlets in
which information is published
• Technology literacy: Understanding the machines that make
the Information Age possible

Category 3. Life Skills (FLIPS)

The five 21st Century life skills are:

• Flexibility: Deviating from plans as needed


• Leadership: Motivating a team to accomplish a goal
• Initiative: Starting projects, strategies, and plans on one’s own
• Productivity: Maintaining efficiency in an age of distractions
• Social skills: Meeting and networking with others for mutual
benefit

Classroom
• is a free web service developed
by Google for schools that aims
to simplify creating, distributing,
and grading assignments. The
primary purpose of Google
Classroom is to streamline the
process of sharing files between
teachers and students.
Edmodo
• Edmodo is an educational technology
company offering a communication,
collaboration, and coaching platform to K-12
schools and teachers. The Edmodo network
enables teachers to share content, distribute
quizzes, assignments, and manage
communication with students, colleagues, and
parents.
Canva
• Canva is a graphic design platform,
used to create social media graphics,
presentations, posters, documents
and other visual content. The app
includes templates for users to use.
The platform is free to use and offers
paid subscriptions like Canva Pro and
Canva for Enterprise for additional
functionality
Survey Monkey
• is an online survey development cloud-
based software as a service company. It
was founded in 1999 by Ryan Finley
and Chris Finley. The company
provides surveys, and a suite of paid
back-end programs.
SlideShare
• is an American hosting service, now owned by Scribd, for
professional content including presentations, infographics,
documents, and videos. Users can upload files privately or publicly
in PowerPoint, Word, PDF, or OpenDocument format.
Workplace by
Facebook
• marketed as Workplace from
Facebook and formerly Workplace
by Facebook – is an online
collaborative software developed by
Facebook, Inc. It facilitates online
groupwork, instant messaging, video
conferencing, and news sharing.
Zoom
• is a videotelephony proprietary software program
developed by Zoom Video Communications. The
free plan provides a video chatting service that
allows up to 100 concurrent participants, with a 40-
minute time restriction. Users have the option to
upgrade by subscribing to a paid plan
Open Broadcaster
Software (OBS)
• is a free and open-source cross-platform
streaming and recording program built with
Qt and maintained by the OBS Project. Since
2016, the software is now referred to as OBS
Studio. There are versions of OBS Studio
available for Microsoft Windows, macOS,
and Linux distributions.
