Introduction
A. Background of the problem

Speaking is more than just using words, it requires a more complex process
of producing speech. Speaking is a useful skill that requires a lot of practice.

Public speaking is process to express and deliver a message or opinion to


audience which combines the skill of speaking and the art of speaking

Meanwhile for some students, public speaking can be a bad experience. For
example, the student are afraid being laughed by their classmates if they
make a mistake when giving a speech in front of the class. The symptoms
experienced by these students’ can be classify into anxiety.
Based on the academic guidelines of the English education study program,
UIN Mahmud Yunus is one of the Islamic universities that has public speaking
courses in the fifth semester.

Based on the past experience in public speaking class, students who


appeared in front of the class experienced anxiety.

The researcher found ten previous research studied on public speaking


anxiety.
Identification of the problem
Before being successful in public speaking, students’
faced many problems when performing in front of the class. For
example, students who have prepared and practiced well but
are shaking and afraid when performing in front of the class it
cannot be said to be successful in public speaking.
Based on the problems that often faced by the students
above, the most important role in the success of public
speaking is anxiety. The researcher wants to do research
specifically on the student strategies in reducing speaking
anxiety in public speaking.
Limitation and formulation of the problem
What are the levels of public speaking class anxiety experienced by students’ of
the English Department at UIN Mahmud Yunus?

What are strategies used by the EFL students to reduce public speaking class
anxiety?

Definition of key term


Strategies is the way to reduce public speaking anxiety.
Speaking anxiety is a feeling of nervous and fear when someone speak
in English in front of the public speaking classroom.
Public speaking is performing a presentation in front of the public
speaking classroom to express and deliver a message or opinion.
Purpose of the research
To describe the levels of public speaking class anxiety experienced by
the students of the English Department at Universitas Islam Negeri
Mahmud Yunus?
To describe their strategies used to reducing public speaking class
anxiety?

Methodology
Research design
This research will use
survey research

Population
Student in public speaking class. It
consist of three class, namely TBI A,
TBI B and TBI C

Sample
The researcher is taking all of student
as a sample. the sample of this
research is 62 students’ in public
speaking class.
Research Instrument
In this research, researcher use two
questionnaires

Personal Report of Public Speaking Anxiety Miller and Leonard (2017) and
(PRPSA) questionnaire by Mccroskey O’Hair (2009)

The questionnaire consists of 34 questions. It The questionnaire consists of 11

Students’ Level of Anxiety Based on Gender Students’ Level of Anxiety

The highest level of anxiety is moderate with 29 From the table, were 22 students’ with low
female students’ (47%) and 9 male students’ level of anxiety, 38 students with moderate
(14%). Follow by low level of anxiety with 14 level of anxiety and 2 students of high
female students’ (22%) and 8 male students’ level of anxiety.
(13%). The lowest score is high with 1 female
students’ (2%) and 1 male students’ (2%).
Result Strategies in Reducing Public Speaking Anxiety

It can be described that the highest strategies in reducing Public Speaking


anxiety used by students’ is breathe and release 91% respondents. While
based on gender, the highest strategy used by male students’ is breathe and
release 28% respondents and for female students’ the highest strategy used
to reduce Public Speaking anxiety is breathe and release 63% respondent.
