REVIEW
ENUMERATE THE DIFFERENT ORGANS UNDER THE MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT MOVABLE JOINTS IN OUR BODY?

WHAT ARE THE HEALTHFUL HABITS THAT PROMOTES PROPER FUNCTIONING OF

THE MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM?
Integumentary system

Comes from the word “Integument” which means natural covering.

Integumentary system is composed of coverings in our body.
QUESTION

WHAT IS THE LARGEST ORGAN IN THE HUMAN BODY?

Integumentary system

It also includes the largest organ of our body, The SKIN.

Extensions of the skin is the NAILS AND HAIRS.
They provide protection to the inner tissues of the body.
Anatomy of the Integumentary System

01 Skin
- Largest organ of the body.
- “Jack of all trades”
- Versatile organ that can perform a wide range of
functions.
01 Skin
- Barrier that helps keep the underlying tissues
moist
- blocks the entry of microorganisms
- Maintains body temperature
The skin, its layers and
their functions.
01 Skin
- Principal organ of the integumentary system.
- Has a large number of nerve openings that
helps humans in perceiving the sense of touch,
pressure, pain and changes in temperature.

Skin is composed of three layers: Epidermis, Dermis and

Hypodermis.
EPIDERMIS
- Outermost layer of the
skin
- Consists of epithelial
tissues. (where cells are
packed together tightly)
- Providing barrier outside
the body.
EPIDERMIS
- made up of dead skin
cells.
- physical barrier against
abrasion, bacterial
invasion, dehydration
and ultraviolet radiation.
- Constantly renews itself.
EPIDERMIS
- Made up of millions of
microscopic building
blocks called
“Cells”
- Friction or rubbing
causes it to grow thicker.
DERMIS
- layer of connective
tissue located below the
epidermis.
- provides support for the
skin and contains blood
vessels that nourishes
skin cells.
DERMIS
- contains nerve tissue that
provides sense of touch
and muscle tissues that is
responsible for giving
you “goosebumps”
DERMIS
- Very flexible due to the
tiny strands or fibers that
allows it to stretch easily
and spring back into
shape.
- The glands that secretes
sweat is located in here.
HYPODERMIS
or the “Subcutaneous tissue”

- Layer of loose
connective tissue.
- Flexible layer that
connects the skin and the
underlying muscles and
bones.
HYPODERMIS
or the “Subcutaneous tissue”

- An area where fat is

stored.
- Elastin and collagen
fibers are loosely
arranged in the areolar
connective tissue.
HYPODERMIS
or the “Subcutaneous tissue”

- Fatty adipose tissue

stores energy in the form
of triglycerides.
- Also helps the body
insulation since it traps
the body heat produced
by underlying muscles.
The hair, its layers and
their functions.
02 Hair
- filamentous cornified structures that grow out
of the skin and cover most of the body surface.
02 Hair
- The human body have different types of hair in
different parts of the body.
- Main hairs are commonly found in the head or
scalp.
- Thick and Long (5 million tiny hairs)
- Palms, Fingers and Soles of the feet
(lack hair)
FOLLICLE
- Base- where the hair
grows and get longer.
- It lengthens as new
microscopic cells add to
its base or root.
- Hair cells stick together
to form a scalpy-looking
rod that slowly pushes
upward out of the
follicle
FOLLICLE
- a fold in the epidermis
that leads down into the
dermis.
HAIR SHAFT
- grows up the follicle to
the surface.
- Hair is linked to a
muscle that pulls the
follicle so that the hair
stands up.
SEBACEOUS
GLAND
- tiny lump-like part
- Which makes the greasy
substance called
“sebum” or the skin
natural oil.
- Oozes up to the skin’s
surface and spreads out.
- Repel water and kill
germs.
The nails, its layers and
their functions.
03 Fingernails and Toenails
- Made of keratin
- the main sheet or plate of the nail is
dead, only the root is alive and is
hidden under the skin of the finger or
toe.
NAIL PLATE
- curved slab of keratin
that sits on the nail bed.
CUTICLE
- sensitive skin of the nail
lateral border.
- As nail lengtherns from
its roots it slides along
the nail bed toward the
tip of the finger or toe.
Most nails grows about 3 millimeters
each month. Finger nails grow faster
than toenails
A blow to the nail base can cause
damage to the part of the nail forming
there.
